Charge speeds

Across the Alfa Romeo range.

Every Alfa Romeo here uses a Type 2 inlet, so one Type 2 to Type 2 cable fits the range. On-board AC charging ranges from about 7.4kW to 11kW depending on the model. A cable never charges faster than your car's on-board charger or your home supply allows, so on a standard single-phase UK home a 7.4 kW cable gives the full speed available.

Speeds are on-board AC limits. Rapid DC uses the station's own cable.

Charging guide

Charging
your Alfa Romeo.

Alfa Romeo's electrified range covers two full battery-electric models and one plug-in hybrid: the Giulia electric saloon, the Junior Elettrica compact crossover, and the Tonale PHEV. All three use a Type 2 inlet, so every Alfa Romeo in the current line-up takes the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging.

What varies across the range is AC charging speed, which determines whether a standard 7.4kW cable is all you need or whether a larger cable is worth considering. The Giulia and Junior Elettrica have 11kW three-phase onboard chargers, while the Tonale PHEV charges more slowly at 7.4kW on a single phase. Pick your model below for its exact recommended cable and charge times, or read the brand-wide guidance underneath.

What charging cable does a Alfa Romeo need?

Every Alfa Romeo EV and plug-in hybrid uses a Type 2 inlet, so the cable you need is always a Type 2 to Type 2. A 5m length suits most home driveways and public charge points, while 7m or 10m is worth choosing for on-street parking or a wallbox that sits some distance from where the car's charging port falls.

The Giulia and Junior Elettrica each have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger. Almost all UK homes are single-phase, capping home charging at 7.4kW regardless of the cable, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers the full speed a standard home supply can provide. A 22kW cable only adds value if you have a three-phase supply at home or regularly use 22kW public AC charge points, where these models will draw their full 11kW.

The Tonale PHEV charges at up to 7.4kW on a single phase and has a 15.5kWh battery, so a 7.4kW cable is more than sufficient for everyday top-ups. In short, a single 5m 7.4kW Type 2 cable suits the entire Alfa Romeo range.

Do all Alfa Romeos use a Type 2 charging cable?+

Yes. The Giulia, Junior Elettrica, and Tonale PHEV all use a Type 2 inlet. That means every Alfa Romeo currently sold in the UK takes a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging. No Alfa Romeo in the current range needs a Type 1 cable.

What charging cable does an Alfa Romeo Giulia or Junior Elettrica need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, 5m for most driveways. Both models have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger, but on a standard single-phase home supply they charge at 7.4kW, so a 7.4kW cable covers that. A 22kW cable is only worthwhile if you have a three-phase supply or use 22kW public AC points.

Can an Alfa Romeo charge at 22kW AC?+

No Alfa Romeo currently charges at 22kW on AC. The Giulia and Junior Elettrica top out at 11kW on a three-phase supply; the Tonale PHEV reaches 7.4kW on a single phase. On a normal UK single-phase home wallbox, both BEV models charge at 7.4kW, so there is no need to buy a cable rated above that for home use.

What cable does the Alfa Romeo Tonale PHEV need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The Tonale PHEV charges at up to 7.4kW on AC and has a 15.5kWh battery, so a standard 7.4kW cable is well matched to it. Its smaller battery can also be topped up overnight from a 3-pin granny charger if you want to keep the Type 2 cable for public charge points.

What length cable do I need for my Alfa Romeo?+

5m is the right choice for most home wallboxes and the majority of public charge points. Step up to 7m or 10m if you park on the street, share a charger with another car, or your wallbox is positioned some distance from where the inlet sits on the car. Buy the shortest length that reaches comfortably, as longer cables are heavier to coil and carry.
