Why this fits your ID.3+

The Volkswagen ID.3 has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 11kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 11kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.

Which Volkswagen ID.3 versions does it fit?+

This cable fits every Volkswagen ID.3, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:

  • Volkswagen ID.3 GTX
  • Volkswagen ID.3 Max
  • Volkswagen ID.3 Pro
  • Volkswagen ID.3 City
  • Volkswagen ID.3 Life
  • Volkswagen ID.3 Tech

Whichever ID.3 trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Volkswagen ID.3.

The Volkswagen ID.3 is a fully electric hatchback on sale in the UK since 2020, built on VW's MEB platform. It comes in a range of trims from City and Life through to Pro, Tech, Max, and the performance-oriented GTX, with battery options spanning around 58kWh in most configurations and a larger 77kWh pack in the Pro S and Max variants. All use a Type 2 inlet for AC charging and a CCS port for DC rapid charging, with DC rates reaching up to around 170kW on the larger battery.

For AC charging at a home wallbox or public slow or fast charger, you bring your own Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The ID.3's onboard charger accepts up to 11kW on three phases across all trims, which sets the ceiling for how quickly the battery fills from any AC source.

Select your battery above. The 77kWh Pro S and Max share the same 11kW AC rate but charge faster on DC. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the ID.3 need?

The ID.3 accepts up to 11kW on three phases, but virtually all UK homes have a single-phase supply that caps AC charging at 7.4kW regardless of cable rating. A 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the clear, cost-effective recommendation for home charging: it maxes out the single-phase supply and avoids the premium of a three-phase alternative that would charge at exactly the same rate at home.

A 22kW rated cable becomes worthwhile if you regularly pull into 22kW public AC charge points or if you have a three-phase supply at your property. At those points the ID.3 will draw 11kW. For purely home-based charging on a single-phase connection, the 22kW cable offers no practical benefit over the 7.4kW version.

What does it cost to charge?

Charging the 58kWh battery from empty on an off-peak tariff of around 7.5p per kWh costs roughly £4 to £5. The 77kWh pack costs around £6 off-peak, or roughly £21 at a standard rate of around 27p per kWh. Overnight charging on an EV tariff makes the ID.3 one of the cheaper family hatchbacks to run. Public rapid charging is far more expensive, often 45p or more per kWh, so it is best kept for longer journeys. Check current rates.

Contact us
What charging cable does the Volkswagen ID.3 need?+

The Volkswagen ID.3 has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on up to three-phase AC at up to 11kW.

Can the Volkswagen ID.3 charge at 22kW?+

Yes, the Volkswagen ID.3 has a three-phase onboard charger, so with a 22kW cable and a three-phase supply it can charge at up to 11kW.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What charging cable does the VW ID.3 need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC charge points. All ID.3 trims have an 11kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable is the right choice for the vast majority of UK home setups; choose a 22kW cable only if you have a three-phase supply or frequently use 22kW public AC chargers.

Can the VW ID.3 charge at 22kW?+

No. The ID.3's onboard AC charger tops out at 11kW on three phases. Even at a 22kW public charge point with a 22kW cable, the car draws at most 11kW. On a standard single-phase UK home connection, AC charging is capped at 7.4kW, regardless of which cable you use.

How long does the VW ID.3 take to charge at home?+

On a 7.4kW home wallbox, the 58kWh battery takes around eight hours from empty and the 77kWh Pro S takes around ten and a half hours. Both sit comfortably within an overnight window. A 3-pin granny cable at around 2.3kW is much slower at 25 to 33 hours and is best kept as a backup.

What length cable do I need for the VW ID.3?+

A 5m cable works for most driveways and is the standard choice. If your wallbox is some distance from your typical parking spot, or you park nose-in on a long drive, measure the run to the charging port and consider 7m or 10m to ensure it reaches without tension.
