Why this fits your ID.4+

The Volkswagen ID.4 has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 11kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 11kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.

Which Volkswagen ID.4 versions does it fit?+

This cable fits every Volkswagen ID.4, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:

  • Volkswagen ID.4 Pure
  • Volkswagen ID.4 Pro
  • Volkswagen ID.4 GTX
  • Volkswagen ID.4 Life
  • Volkswagen ID.4 Family
  • Volkswagen ID.4 Style
  • Volkswagen ID.4 Match
  • Volkswagen ID.4 Max

Whichever ID.4 trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Volkswagen ID.4.

The Volkswagen ID.4 is VW's family electric SUV, built on the MEB platform and on sale in the UK since 2021. It comes in two main battery sizes: the Pure and Pure Performance use a 52kWh pack for around 210 to 230 miles WLTP, while the Pro and Pro Performance use a 77kWh pack for around 320 to 340 miles WLTP. Both charge through a Type 2 inlet for AC and a CCS port for rapid DC.

For day to day charging at home or at public AC points, the cable you bring is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead. The ID.4's onboard AC charger accepts up to 11kW on three phases, and it rapid charges on DC at up to around 135kW depending on model year and battery, which uses the charger's own tethered cable rather than one you buy.

Pick your battery and charge level above. The 52kWh Pure fills noticeably faster than the 77kWh Pro on every method. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the ID.4 need?

The ID.4's onboard AC charger tops out at 11kW on three phases. Almost all UK homes have a single-phase supply, which caps home charging at 7.4kW no matter what cable you use, so for most owners a 7.4kW Type 2 cable delivers the full speed your driveway can provide and is the sensible, cheaper pick.

A 22kW rated cable only earns its extra cost if you have a three-phase home supply, which is uncommon, or you regularly use 22kW public AC points. In those cases the ID.4 will pull its full 11kW. On any single-phase setup the bigger cable charges at exactly the same 7.4kW as the cheaper one, so it buys future-proofing rather than speed.

The ID.4's charging port sits at the rear on the right-hand side of the car. A 5m cable suits most driveways, but if your wallbox is near the front of the drive or you park nose-in, measure from the socket to the rear of the car and consider a 7m or 10m lead so it reaches comfortably.

What does it cost to charge?

Filling the 77kWh Pro from empty costs roughly £5 to £6 on an off-peak EV tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, and around £21 on a standard rate of around 27p per kWh. Charging overnight on a dedicated EV tariff is comfortably the cheapest way to run an ID.4. Public rapid charging is far dearer, often 45p to 80p per kWh, so it is best kept for longer trips. Check current rates, as tariffs change.

Contact us
What charging cable does the Volkswagen ID.4 need?+

The Volkswagen ID.4 has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on up to three-phase AC at up to 11kW.

Can the Volkswagen ID.4 charge at 22kW?+

Yes, the Volkswagen ID.4 has a three-phase onboard charger, so with a 22kW cable and a three-phase supply it can charge at up to 11kW.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

Does the VW ID.4 charge at 22kW?+

No. The ID.4's onboard AC charger is limited to 11kW on three phases, so it cannot charge faster than 11kW on AC whatever cable you use. A 22kW cable will still only deliver 11kW to the car, and only then if you have a three-phase supply. On a standard single-phase home it charges at 7.4kW.

What cable does the VW ID.4 need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC points. A 5m length suits most driveways. For a single-phase home a 7.4kW cable gives the full speed available; choose a 22kW three-phase cable only if you have a three-phase supply or use 22kW public AC chargers.

How long does a VW ID.4 take to charge at home?+

On a typical 7.4kW home wallbox, the 77kWh Pro takes around 10.5 hours from empty to full, which easily covers an overnight charge. The smaller 52kWh Pure is quicker at around 7 hours. A standard 3-pin granny charger is far slower at around 33 hours and is best kept as a backup.

What is the real-world range of the VW ID.4?+

The 77kWh Pro is rated at around 320 to 340 miles WLTP, and the 52kWh Pure at around 210 to 230 miles. Expect less in cold weather or at motorway speeds, as with any EV. Preconditioning the battery before a rapid charge in winter helps you reach the ID.4's full DC speed.
