Charging guide
Charging
your Chevrolet.
The only Chevrolet plug-in model in the UK market data is the original Volt, a plug-in hybrid that uses a Type 1 inlet. Unlike most current EVs, the Volt does not accept a Type 2 to Type 2 cable; it needs a Type 2 to Type 1 cable to charge from a home wallbox or public Type 2 point.
The Volt's onboard AC charger is rated at 3.3kW on a single phase, which is modest by today's standards. That means charge times are slow and the battery, at 16.5kWh usable, tops up gradually rather than rapidly. What charging cable does a Chevrolet need?
The Chevrolet Volt requires a Type 2 to Type 1 cable. It will not charge through a standard Type 2 to Type 2 lead. Always check the car's inlet, which is the five-pin round Type 1 socket, before buying.
At 3.3kW maximum AC charging, the Volt charges slowly compared to modern EVs. A standard 7.4kW rated Type 2 to Type 1 cable is more than the car can draw, and there is no reason to buy a higher-rated cable. The Volt has no DC rapid charging, so the AC cable is the only charge method from a fixed point.
A 5m Type 2 to Type 1 cable suits most home setups. The Volt's slow charge rate means it is well suited to an overnight charge from a home wallbox or even a 3-pin granny charger, which charges at around 2.3kW. The AC cable is most useful for topping up at public Type 2 charge points when travelling.

Contact usDoes the Chevrolet Volt use a Type 1 or Type 2 charging cable?+−
The Chevrolet Volt uses a Type 1 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 1 cable. It will not charge through a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. This is different from most modern EVs sold in the UK, which have moved to Type 2 as standard.
What charging cable does the Chevrolet Volt need?+−
A Type 2 to Type 1 cable, 5m for most home setups. The Volt charges at 3.3kW on AC, so a standard 7.4kW rated cable is well above what the car can draw. There is no need for a higher-rated cable, and no benefit to one.
Can the Chevrolet Volt use DC rapid charging?+−
No. The Chevrolet Volt has no DC rapid charging capability. The Type 2 to Type 1 cable is the only way to charge it from a fixed point. Charging at 3.3kW AC means a full charge from empty takes around 5 hours on a home wallbox.
Is a 7.4kW cable suitable for the Chevrolet Volt?+−
Yes, a 7.4kW rated Type 2 to Type 1 cable works fine. The Volt's onboard charger is limited to 3.3kW regardless of the cable rating, so the car will never draw more than that. A 7.4kW cable is simply the most common rating available in this format.
What length cable do I need for the Chevrolet Volt?+−
5m is the right starting point for most home wallboxes and public charge points. Go for 7m or 10m if you park on the street or the charge point is set well back from where you park. The Volt's slow charge rate means it is often left overnight, so cable length matters more for convenience than speed.
