Why this fits your Ioniq PHEV+

The Hyundai Ioniq PHEV has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 3.3kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Hyundai Ioniq PHEV.

The Hyundai Ioniq PHEV is a first-generation plug-in hybrid hatchback, produced from 2017 to 2022. It pairs a 1.6-litre petrol engine with a small 8.9kWh battery for electric-only driving at lower speeds and on shorter journeys. Plugging in to recharge the battery uses a Type 2 inlet, and the cable you bring to a home wallbox or public AC point is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead.

There is no DC rapid charging on the Ioniq PHEV. The onboard charger is rated at just 3.3kW on a single-phase supply, which is modest even by PHEV standards. On a 7.4kW home wallbox it will draw only 3.3kW, and on a 3-pin socket it draws even less at around 2.3kW. The good news is that the small 8.9kWh battery fills quickly regardless.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the Ioniq PHEV need?

The Ioniq PHEV's 3.3kW onboard charger is the binding constraint here. Whether you use a 7.4kW cable, a 22kW cable, or any other rating, the car will draw 3.3kW at most. A basic 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable is all this car needs, and a higher-rated cable would offer no benefit at all. The focus is on compatibility and convenience rather than charging speed.

Because the 8.9kWh battery is small, even 3.3kW fills it in under three hours. That means a 5m cable is typically enough for home charging and destination charge points. If you regularly use public chargers where the lead needs to reach further, a 7m cable gives extra flexibility. The cable rating matters less here than simply having one that is compatible and long enough.

What does it cost to charge?

Charging the 8.9kWh battery from empty costs roughly £0.70 on an off-peak tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, or around £2.40 at a standard rate of around 27p per kWh. At these costs it is always worth plugging in when you can, even at a standard rate. Check current tariffs, as they vary.

Contact us
What charging cable does the Hyundai Ioniq PHEV need?+

The Hyundai Ioniq PHEV has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on single-phase AC at up to 3.3kW.

Can the Hyundai Ioniq PHEV charge at 22kW?+

No, the Hyundai Ioniq PHEV has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 3.3kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What cable does the Hyundai Ioniq PHEV need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC chargers. The Ioniq PHEV charges at up to 3.3kW on single-phase AC. Any 7.4kW or higher-rated Type 2 cable works fine; the car's onboard charger limits intake to 3.3kW regardless. There is no DC rapid charging on this model.

Can the Hyundai Ioniq PHEV use rapid charging?+

No. The Ioniq PHEV has no DC rapid charging capability and no CCS port. It charges only through its Type 2 AC inlet at up to 3.3kW. On longer journeys, the petrol engine handles driving once the electric range is used up.

How long does the Hyundai Ioniq PHEV take to charge?+

On a 7.4kW home wallbox, the 8.9kWh battery takes around two to three hours from empty, since the car draws only 3.3kW. On a standard 3-pin socket at around 2.3kW the same charge takes three to four hours. Plugging in daily at home or at work keeps the electric range topped up easily.

Does the Ioniq PHEV need the same cable as the Ioniq Electric?+

Yes, both use a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The difference is charging speed: the PHEV charges at 3.3kW, while the electric model charges at up to 7.2kW. The same cable works for both, but the PHEV charges at a slower rate due to its smaller onboard charger.
