Kia Optima PHEV
Charging cable
Full AC charging speed for your car.
Why this fits your Optima PHEV+−
The Kia Optima PHEV has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 3.3kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.

Charging
the Kia Optima PHEV.
The Kia Optima PHEV is a plug-in hybrid saloon from Kia, produced in the JF generation from 2016 to 2020. It combines a 2.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and a 9.8kWh battery, offering a modest electric range for city driving and commuting. The charging inlet is Type 2, and to charge at home or at a public AC point you use a Type 2 to Type 2 cable.
The Optima PHEV's onboard AC charger is rated at 3.3kW on a single phase. There is no DC rapid charging on this model. The 3.3kW ceiling means a home wallbox and a public AC point deliver the same speed: both simply supply the 3.3kW the car can accept. With a 9.8kWh battery, a full charge from empty takes around three hours at that rate.
Estimates based on battery size and charge power. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.
7.4 kW or 22 kW?
Which cable does
the Optima PHEV need?
The Optima PHEV's 3.3kW onboard charger means the cable rating is largely irrelevant beyond the minimum 3.3kW threshold, which all standard Type 2 cables exceed. A 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the straightforward choice and gives you a cable compatible with any public AC point or home wallbox, while the car draws only the 3.3kW it can handle.
For a saloon with a small battery and a slow charge rate, cable length matters more than specification. A 5m lead covers most home driveways. If your wallbox is at the front of the garage or driveway and you park with the nose pointing in, the socket may be further from the car's rear than you expect: measure first and consider a 7m lead if the run is tight.
What does it cost to charge?
Charging the 9.8kWh battery from empty on an off-peak tariff of around 7.5p per kWh costs under £0.75. At a standard rate of around 27p per kWh the same session comes to around £2.65. Given how small the battery is, charging costs are low across the board, particularly for owners who top up regularly at home. Check current tariff rates, as they change over time.

Kia Optima PHEV FAQs
Good
questions.
Still not sure? Our team will confirm the right cable for your vehicle.
Contact usCan the Kia Optima PHEV charge at 22kW?+−
No, the Kia Optima PHEV has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 3.3kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.
What length charging cable should I get?+−
5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.
What charging cable does the Kia Optima PHEV need?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC points. The Optima PHEV charges at 3.3kW on AC and has no DC rapid charging. A standard 7.4kW Type 2 cable is fully compatible and a 5m length suits most home setups.
Does the Kia Optima PHEV have rapid charging?+−
No. The Optima PHEV is AC-only with a 3.3kW onboard charger and no DC port. All charging happens through the Type 2 inlet using a cable you bring. The small 9.8kWh battery fills from empty in around three hours at this rate.
How long does the Kia Optima PHEV take to charge at home?+−
On a home wallbox or public AC point, the 9.8kWh battery takes around 3 hours from empty at the 3.3kW charge rate. On a standard 3-pin socket at around 2.3kW that extends to around 4.5 hours. A wallbox is the better option for daily home charging, but either way the small battery is never a long wait to top up.
What length cable do I need for the Kia Optima PHEV?+−
A 5m cable works for most driveways. The Optima is a mid-size saloon, so the distance from wallbox to inlet depends on how you park. If your wallbox sits to one side of the driveway or you park in a way that puts the inlet at the far end of the car from the socket, a 7m lead is worth choosing.
