Why this fits your Optima Sportswagon PHEV+

The Kia Optima Sportswagon PHEV has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 3.3kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Kia Optima Sportswagon PHEV.

The Kia Optima Sportswagon PHEV is the estate body variant of Kia's JF-generation Optima plug-in hybrid, sold in the UK from 2017 to 2019. It shares the 2.0-litre petrol and electric motor combination of the saloon but carries a slightly larger 11.3kWh battery, giving marginally more electric range. Like all current PHEVs, it uses a Type 2 inlet and you charge it with a Type 2 to Type 2 cable at home or on any public AC point.

The Sportswagon PHEV's onboard AC charger runs at 3.3kW on a single phase and there is no DC rapid charging port. The 3.3kW rate is the car's firm ceiling regardless of what the charge point is rated for, so a wallbox simply provides what the car requests. With an 11.3kWh battery, a complete fill from empty takes around 3.5 hours at that rate.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the Optima Sportswagon PHEV need?

With a 3.3kW onboard charger, the Optima Sportswagon PHEV does not need anything beyond a standard 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The higher rated 22kW cables are entirely unnecessary here: the car's charger simply cannot draw that power, and any Type 2 cable in working order will max out the available 3.3kW.

The Sportswagon is an estate, so it is slightly longer than the saloon version. If you park nose-in with your wallbox near the front of the property, the inlet at the rear of the car may be further from the socket than you initially expect. A 5m cable handles most driveways, but measuring the run before buying is worth the few seconds it takes.

What does it cost to charge?

Charging the 11.3kWh battery from empty on an off-peak tariff of around 7.5p per kWh costs around £0.85. At a standard rate of around 27p per kWh the same session comes to around £3.05. The battery is compact enough that even at standard rates, keeping it topped up is inexpensive. Regular overnight top-ups make the most of the electric range. Check current tariff rates, as they change.

Contact us
Can the Kia Optima Sportswagon PHEV charge at 22kW?+

No, the Kia Optima Sportswagon PHEV has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 3.3kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What charging cable does the Kia Optima Sportswagon PHEV need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC points. The Sportswagon PHEV charges at 3.3kW on AC and has no DC rapid charging. A 7.4kW rated cable is the right choice and fully covers what the car can use. A 5m length suits most driveways, with 7m as an option if the run is longer.

Does the Kia Optima Sportswagon PHEV support rapid charging?+

No. This model has a Type 2 inlet for AC only, with a 3.3kW onboard charger. There is no CCS or CHAdeMO rapid charging port. Every session uses a cable you bring, and the charge speed is always capped at 3.3kW regardless of what the charge point provides.

How long does the Kia Optima Sportswagon PHEV take to charge?+

The 11.3kWh battery takes around 3.5 hours from empty on a home wallbox or public AC point at the car's 3.3kW rate. On a 3-pin socket at around 2.3kW that extends to roughly 5 hours. For most owners, plugging in each evening at home is enough to keep the battery consistently topped up.

What length cable do I need for the Kia Optima Sportswagon PHEV?+

A 5m cable is the standard recommendation and covers most home driveways. The Sportswagon estate body is longer than the saloon, so if your wallbox is positioned close to the front of the vehicle and the inlet is at the rear, check the distance carefully. A 7m lead is a sensible upgrade if there is any doubt about reach.
