How long does it take?

Charging
the Mini Countryman Cooper S E ALL4.

The Mini Countryman Cooper S E ALL4 in F60 generation was Mini's plug-in hybrid SUV, sold from 2017 to 2023. It shares its drivetrain architecture with the BMW 225xe and uses a Type 2 inlet for AC charging, with no DC rapid-charge capability. Pre-facelift models (2017 to 2020) had a 7.6kWh battery; the 2020 facelift increased this to around 10kWh. The difference affects how long each charge takes but the charging hardware remains the same throughout the generation.

For home and public AC charging you need a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The Countryman PHEV's onboard AC charger is rated at 3.7kW single phase. All charging is AC-only, so the cable you choose is the entire charging story for this vehicle outside of granny-charger use.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the Countryman Cooper S E ALL4 need?

The Countryman PHEV charges at a fixed 3.7kW on any AC supply: the onboard charger is the cap, not the cable. A 7.4kW cable handles the car's full charging capability with headroom to spare. There is no benefit in choosing a 22kW or three-phase cable for this vehicle, as the onboard charger cannot use the extra capacity.

With a relatively small battery and a charge time of under three hours, cable length is the main practical decision. A 5m Type 2 to Type 2 cable works well for most driveways and shared carparks. If your wallbox is installed particularly far from where you park, or the inlet ends up further from the supply than a straight run allows, a 7m cable gives comfortable clearance.

What does it cost to charge?

Charging the 10kWh facelift battery from empty costs less than £1 at an off-peak tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, and roughly £2.50 to £3 at a standard rate of around 27p per kWh. At 3.7kW, the battery fills in under three hours, making a brief evening plug-in or a lunchtime top-up perfectly practical. The earlier 7.6kWh battery charges even faster. Check current tariff rates, as these change.

Mini Countryman Cooper S E ALL4 FAQs

Good
questions.

Contact us
What charging cable does the Mini Countryman Cooper S E ALL4 need?+

The Mini Countryman Cooper S E ALL4 has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on single-phase AC at up to 3.7kW.

Can the Mini Countryman Cooper S E ALL4 charge at 22kW?+

No, the Mini Countryman Cooper S E ALL4 has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 3.7kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What charging cable does the Mini Countryman PHEV (F60) need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The Countryman PHEV uses a standard Type 2 inlet with a 3.7kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable gives the car everything it can use. There is no benefit in choosing a 22kW three-phase cable; the car's onboard charger is limited to 3.7kW regardless.

How long does the Mini Countryman PHEV take to charge?+

At 3.7kW, the 10kWh facelift (2020 onwards) battery takes just under three hours from empty on a home wallbox. The earlier 7.6kWh battery charges in roughly two hours. A 3-pin domestic socket is slightly slower at around 2 to 2.3kW. A dedicated wallbox is the most convenient option for regular charging.

Does the Countryman PHEV support DC rapid charging?+

No. The F60 Countryman PHEV is AC-only: there is no CCS or CHAdeMO port. All charging goes through the Type 2 AC inlet at up to 3.7kW. If DC rapid charging is important to you, the newer U25 Countryman PHEV (from 2024) is a different vehicle with a larger battery and different charging hardware.

What length cable do I need for the Mini Countryman PHEV?+

A 5m cable is right for most home driveways. If there is a longer run between the wallbox and where the Countryman parks, or the charging inlet is on the far side from the supply, a 7m lead makes the daily plug-in more comfortable. A 10m cable is rarely needed but available if your setup is particularly awkward.
