Why this fits your A3 TFSIe+

The Audi A3 TFSIe has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 3.6kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Audi A3 TFSIe.

The Audi A3 TFSIe (8Y generation) is a plug-in hybrid hatchback on sale in the UK since 2020. Available in 40 and 45 TFSIe power outputs, it combines a turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and a 10.4kWh usable battery. The charging inlet is Type 2, so you will need a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC posts.

There is no DC rapid charging on the A3 TFSIe: AC is the only plug-in option, at up to 3.6kW on a single phase. The battery is compact by BEV standards, so home charging sessions are short, and a standard domestic socket can top it up overnight in a pinch.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the A3 TFSIe need?

The A3 TFSIe charges at a maximum of 3.6kW, which is determined by the car's onboard charger, not by your wallbox or cable. Even a standard 7.4kW wallbox will only push 3.6kW into the car, so a 7.4kW Type 2 cable is the right choice and there is no reason to spend more on a higher-rated lead.

A 22kW or three-phase cable offers zero advantage on this car. The charging rate is fixed by the onboard hardware at 3.6kW and cannot be increased. Choose a cable length that suits your driveway: 5m handles most situations, while 7m gives extra reach if your wallbox and parking spot are not close together.

What does it cost to charge?

Charging the 10.4kWh battery from empty costs roughly 75p to 80p at an off-peak rate of around 7.5p per kWh, and around £2.80 at a standard rate of around 27p per kWh. Keeping the battery topped up regularly is a low-cost habit that maximises electric-only mileage and reduces petrol use. Check current energy tariffs, as rates vary.

Contact us
Can the Audi A3 TFSIe charge at 22kW?+

No, the Audi A3 TFSIe has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 3.6kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What charging cable does the Audi A3 TFSIe need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC charge points. The A3 TFSIe charges at up to 3.6kW on a single phase and has no DC rapid charging port. A standard 7.4kW cable is perfectly compatible and is all you need.

Can the Audi A3 TFSIe charge faster than 3.6kW?+

No. The onboard charger is rated at 3.6kW single-phase, and that is the hard limit regardless of what wallbox or cable you use. There is no DC capability on this model, so AC at 3.6kW is the maximum charging rate available.

How long does the Audi A3 TFSIe take to charge?+

At 3.6kW on a wallbox, the 10.4kWh usable battery takes roughly 3 hours from empty to full. On a standard 3-pin socket at around 2.3kW, expect around 4.5 hours. Either way the battery can be fully recharged in a single session without difficulty.

What length charging cable do I need for the Audi A3 TFSIe?+

A 5m cable covers the majority of home driveways and public parking bays comfortably. If your wallbox is positioned some distance from where the car parks, or you want flexibility when visiting public charge points, a 7m cable provides a useful extra margin.
