Charge speeds
Across the Audi range.
Every Audi here uses a Type 2 inlet, so one Type 2 to Type 2 cable fits the range. On-board AC charging ranges from about 3.6kW to 11kW depending on the model. A cable never charges faster than your car's on-board charger or your home supply allows, so on a standard single-phase UK home a 7.4 kW cable gives the full speed available.
Speeds are on-board AC limits. Rapid DC uses the station's own cable.

Charging guide
Charging
your Audi.
Audi's electrified range spans 18 models, from older plug-in hybrids like the A3 Sportback e-tron and Q7 e-tron through newer PHEVs such as the A5 e-hybrid, Q3 e-hybrid and Q5 e-hybrid, up to full battery electrics including the Q4 e-tron, Q6 e-tron, A6 e-tron, Q8 e-tron and e-tron GT. Every single one uses a Type 2 inlet, so the same cable type works across the entire Audi line-up for home and public AC charging.
What varies considerably is how fast each Audi charges on AC, and that determines whether a larger cable is worth buying. Older PHEVs like the A3 TFSIe and Q3 TFSIe charge at just 3.6kW, while newer e-hybrid models and all the BEVs have 11kW three-phase onboard chargers. Pick your model below for its specific charge times and recommended cable, or read the brand-wide guidance underneath.
What charging cable does a Audi need?
Every Audi EV and plug-in hybrid uses a Type 2 inlet, so the cable you need is a Type 2 to Type 2. A 5m lead suits most driveways and home wallboxes; step up to 7m or 10m if you park on-street or your wallbox sits far from the charging port. No Audi needs a Type 1 cable.
The newer e-hybrid PHEVs, such as the A5 e-hybrid, A6 e-hybrid, Q3 e-hybrid and Q5 e-hybrid, along with all Audi BEVs including the Q4 e-tron, Q6 e-tron and e-tron GT, have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger. Almost all UK homes are single-phase, which caps charging at 7.4kW regardless of the cable, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers the fastest charge your home can provide. A 22kW cable only unlocks extra speed on a three-phase supply or at a 22kW public AC point, where these cars will pull their full 11kW.
Older Audi PHEVs, including the A3 Sportback e-tron, A3 TFSIe, Q3 TFSIe, Q7 e-tron, A6 TFSIe, A7 TFSIe, A8 TFSIe and Q5 TFSIe, charge more slowly on AC, typically between 3.6kW and 7.4kW. For these a standard 7.4kW cable is already more than the car can draw. In short, a single 5m 7.4kW Type 2 cable covers the whole Audi range at home.

Contact usDo all Audis use a Type 2 charging cable?+−
Yes. Every Audi EV and plug-in hybrid, from the oldest A3 Sportback e-tron to the latest Q6 e-tron and e-tron GT, uses a Type 2 inlet. They all take the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging, and no Audi needs a Type 1 cable.
What charging cable does an Audi Q4 e-tron or Q6 e-tron need?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, 5m for most driveways. Both have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger, but on a standard single-phase home supply they charge at 7.4kW, so a 7.4kW cable provides the full speed your home can give. A 22kW cable only helps if you have a three-phase supply or use 22kW public AC points.
Can an Audi charge at 22kW AC?+−
No Audi charges at 22kW on AC. The newest BEVs and e-hybrid PHEVs top out at 11kW on three phases. On a standard single-phase UK home supply, every Audi charges at 7.4kW or less, so a 22kW cable offers no benefit at home.
What cable does an older Audi PHEV like the A3 TFSIe or Q5 TFSIe need?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. These older PHEVs charge at between 3.6kW and 7.4kW on AC, so a standard 7.4kW cable is more than enough. Their smaller batteries also charge overnight from a 3-pin granny charger if you prefer to save the Type 2 cable for public charge points.
What length cable do I need for my Audi?+−
5m suits most home wallboxes and public charge points. Go for 7m or 10m if you park on-street, share a charge point, or your wallbox is positioned far from the car's charging port. Longer cables cost more and are heavier to coil, so buy the shortest length that reaches comfortably.
