Why this fits your 225xe Active Tourer+

The BMW 225xe Active Tourer has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 3.7kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.

How long does it take?

Charging
the BMW 225xe Active Tourer.

The BMW 225xe Active Tourer was a plug-in hybrid MPV sold in the UK between 2016 and 2021, combining a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and a 10kWh battery. It was a practical family carrier with seven-seat potential and the ability to cover shorter urban trips on electric power alone. If you own one, charging goes through a Type 2 inlet.

The cable you carry to a home wallbox or public AC point is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead. The 225xe's onboard AC charger is rated at around 3.7kW on a single phase, which is typical for plug-in hybrids of that generation. There is no DC rapid charging on this model. At 3.7kW, the 10kWh battery charges from empty in roughly 3 hours, making it easy to top up during a working day.

Estimates based on battery size and charge power. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the 225xe Active Tourer need?

Because the 225xe's onboard charger is limited to 3.7kW, the cable rating makes no difference to how fast it charges. A 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 lead is the sensible choice because it is widely compatible with all UK home wallboxes and public AC points, but the car will draw no more than 3.7kW through it. Buying a higher-rated cable adds cost without adding speed.

A 5m Type 2 to Type 2 cable is plenty for most driveways and public bays, and easy to stow in an MPV. Because charge sessions are short and the battery is compact, a 7m or longer cable is only really needed if your wallbox is some distance from where you typically park the car.

What does it cost to charge?

Filling the 10kWh battery from empty costs roughly £1 on an off-peak EV tariff at around 7.5p per kWh, or around £3 at a standard daytime rate of around 27p per kWh. The small battery and low charge rate mean it is one of the cheapest to run on electricity when the routine is there: plug in at home each evening and wake up with a full charge. There is no DC rapid charging, so public top-ups use an AC cable. Check current tariff rates.

Contact us
What charging cable does the BMW 225xe Active Tourer need?+

The BMW 225xe Active Tourer has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on single-phase AC at up to 3.7kW.

Can the BMW 225xe Active Tourer charge at 22kW?+

No, the BMW 225xe Active Tourer has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 3.7kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What cable does the BMW 225xe Active Tourer need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The 225xe uses a Type 2 inlet and has a 3.7kW single-phase onboard AC charger. There is no DC rapid charging. A standard 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 lead is the right choice for any wallbox or public AC point; the cable rating does not change how fast the car charges beyond 3.7kW.

Can the BMW 225xe use a 7.4kW or 22kW charger?+

It can plug into them, but will only draw 3.7kW regardless of the charger's output rating. The onboard charger in the 225xe is limited to 3.7kW on a single phase, so no cable or charger upgrade changes that ceiling. There is also no DC rapid charging port on this model.

How long does a BMW 225xe take to charge at home?+

From empty, the 10kWh battery takes roughly 3 hours on a 3.7kW wallbox. A standard 3-pin socket at around 2.3kW extends that to around 4 to 5 hours, which is still manageable overnight or during a full working day. The small battery means even a partial top-up adds useful electric range for commuting.

What length cable do I need for a BMW 225xe?+

A 5m Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the practical standard. The 225xe is a compact MPV so most driveways and public bays are covered without needing a longer lead. A 7m cable is worth considering if your wallbox is positioned some distance from where you usually park. Going longer than that is rarely necessary for a car of this size.
