Charge speeds

Across the BMW range.

Every BMW here uses a Type 2 inlet, so one Type 2 to Type 2 cable fits the range. On-board AC charging ranges from about 3.7kW to 11kW depending on the model. A cable never charges faster than your car's on-board charger or your home supply allows, so on a standard single-phase UK home a 7.4 kW cable gives the full speed available.

Speeds are on-board AC limits. Rapid DC uses the station's own cable.

Charging guide

Charging
your BMW.

BMW's plug-in range spans a broad mix of full electrics and plug-in hybrids. The electric lineup includes the i3, i4, i5, i7, i8, iX, iX1, iX2 and iX3, while the plug-in hybrid side covers models like the 330e, 530e, 740e, X1 xDrive25e, X3 xDrive30e, X5 xDrive45e and the XM. Every single BMW in the range uses a Type 2 inlet, so they all take a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging.

What differs across the range is how fast each model charges on AC, and that is what determines whether a 7.4kW cable or a larger one is worth buying. The newer full-electric BMWs such as the i4, i5, i7, iX, iX1, iX2 and iX3 have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger, while the plug-in hybrids and the older i3 top out at 7.4kW or below on a single phase. Pick your model below for exact charging times and a recommended cable, or read the brand-wide guidance underneath.

What charging cable does a BMW need?

Every BMW EV and plug-in hybrid charges through a Type 2 inlet, so the cable you need is a Type 2 to Type 2. A 5m length suits most driveways and wallboxes; choose 7m or 10m for on-street parking or a socket that sits well away from the charging port.

The full-electric i-series models (i4, i5, i7, iX, iX1, iX2, iX3) have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger. Almost all UK homes are single-phase, which caps home charging at 7.4kW regardless of the cable, so a 7.4kW cable delivers the full speed a standard home supply can provide. A 22kW rated cable is only worth the extra cost if you have a three-phase supply or use 22kW public AC points regularly, where these cars will accept their full 11kW.

BMW plug-in hybrids like the 330e, 530e, 740e, X1 xDrive25e and X3 xDrive30e charge at around 3.7kW on AC, and the X5 xDrive45e, XM and M5 top out at 7.4kW. For all of these a 7.4kW cable is already more than the car can draw, so there is no reason to pay for a bigger one. The older i3 sits in the same bracket at 7.4kW. In short, a single 5m 7.4kW Type 2 cable suits the entire BMW range.

Do all BMWs use a Type 2 charging cable?+

Yes. Every BMW EV and plug-in hybrid, from the i3 and the 330e through to the i7 and the M5, uses a Type 2 inlet. They all take the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging, and no BMW needs a Type 1 cable.

What charging cable does a BMW i4 or iX need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, 5m for most driveways. Both have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger, but on a standard single-phase UK home supply they charge at 7.4kW, so a 7.4kW cable gives the full speed available at home. A 22kW cable only helps if you have a three-phase supply or use 22kW public AC points.

Can a BMW charge at 22kW on AC?+

No BMW in the current range charges at 22kW on AC. The three-phase i-series models such as the i4, i5 and iX top out at 11kW, and only achieve that on a three-phase supply. On a standard single-phase home every BMW charges at 7.4kW or less.

What cable does a BMW plug-in hybrid like the 330e or X5 xDrive45e need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The 330e and most BMW PHEVs charge at around 3.7kW on AC, while the X5 xDrive45e and XM manage 7.4kW. A standard 7.4kW cable covers every BMW PHEV, and their small batteries also charge fully overnight from a 3-pin granny charger if you prefer to keep the lead for public points.

What length charging cable do I need for my BMW?+

5m suits most home wallboxes and public charge points. Step up to 7m or 10m if you park on the street, share a charger, or your wallbox sits well away from the car's charging port. Longer cables add weight and bulk, so buy the shortest length that reaches comfortably.
