BMW 530e
Charging cable
Full AC charging speed for your car.
Why this fits your 530e+−
The BMW 530e has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 3.7kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.

How long does it take?
Charging
the BMW 530e.
The BMW 530e is a plug-in hybrid executive saloon that pairs a petrol engine with an electric motor, giving you the option to cover short commutes on electric power alone before the combustion engine takes over. UK models from 2017 onwards charge through a Type 2 inlet, so the cable you buy for home and public AC charging is a standard Type 2 to Type 2 lead. Battery capacity has changed across years: the G30 generation carried around 9.2kWh gross, while later 5 Series PHEV variants moved to a larger pack, giving a usable electric range of roughly 20 to 35 miles depending on conditions.
Because the 530e is a plug-in hybrid rather than a full EV, its onboard AC charger is intentionally modest. It accepts up to 3.7kW on a single phase, which is all the car draws regardless of what your wallbox or cable is rated at. There is no DC rapid charging port, so home and public AC points are your only charging options.
Estimates based on battery size and charge power. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.
7.4 kW or 22 kW?
Which cable does
the 530e need?
The 530e's 3.7kW onboard charger is the bottleneck here, not your wallbox or cable. A 7.4kW or 22kW rated cable will not charge this car any faster than 3.7kW, because the car itself limits the rate. For that reason, a basic single-phase Type 2 cable rated to 7.4kW is all you practically need, and spending more on a 22kW three-phase cable gains you nothing with this car.
A 5m cable handles most driveway layouts comfortably, covering a typical gap between a wallbox and the car. If your setup means the cable has further to travel, a 7m or 10m lead avoids the awkward stretch. Given the modest charge rate, leaving the 530e plugged in overnight easily restores a full electric charge whatever reasonable length you choose.
A 5m cable suits most driveways. Choose 7m or 10m if your wallbox is set back from where you normally park.
What does it cost to charge?
Topping up an 18.7kWh battery from empty at home costs roughly £1.40 on an off-peak EV tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, or around £5 at a standard rate of around 27p per kWh. Older G30 cars with the smaller 9.2kWh pack cost around 70p off-peak. These are small sums, which is partly what makes the 530e attractive for short daily runs. Check current tariff rates, as energy prices change.

BMW 530e FAQs
Good
questions.

Contact usCan the BMW 530e charge at 22kW?+−
No, the BMW 530e has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 3.7kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.
What length charging cable should I get?+−
5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.
What charging cable does the BMW 530e need?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC charging points. The 530e has a Type 2 inlet and charges at up to 3.7kW on a single phase. A 7.4kW rated cable is more than enough; a 22kW three-phase cable offers no benefit for this car.
Can the BMW 530e use rapid DC charging?+−
No. The 530e is a plug-in hybrid with no DC rapid charging port. You charge it at AC points only, via its Type 2 inlet. Public rapids require a CCS or CHAdeMO port, which the 530e does not have.
How long does the BMW 530e take to charge at home?+−
At 3.7kW, a full charge of the 18.7kWh battery takes roughly 5 to 6 hours from empty. The older 9.2kWh pack takes around 2.5 hours. Plugging in overnight is easily enough time for a full charge before the morning commute.
What length cable is best for the BMW 530e?+−
A 5m cable works for most driveways and standard wallbox positions. If your charging point is further from where you park, a 7m or 10m lead gives extra reach without any compromise on charging speed, since the 530e only draws 3.7kW regardless.
