BMW 740e
Charging cable
Full AC charging speed for your car.
Why this fits your 740e+−
The BMW 740e has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 3.7kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.

How long does it take?
Charging
the BMW 740e.
The BMW 740e iPerformance is a G11 7 Series plug-in hybrid saloon, sold in the UK from 2016 to 2019. It brought electric assist to BMW's flagship luxury saloon, with a 9.2kWh gross battery giving a modest electric-only range for city driving before the six-cylinder petrol engine takes over seamlessly. For home and public AC charging, the 740e uses a Type 2 inlet, so the cable you need is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead.
Like most BMW PHEVs of this era, the 740e's onboard AC charger is rated at 3.7kW single-phase. There is no DC rapid charging port, so the only way to add electric range is through an AC wallbox or a public AC point. The 9.2kWh battery is small enough that even at 3.7kW a full charge takes around two and a half hours.
Estimates based on battery size and charge power. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.
7.4 kW or 22 kW?
Which cable does
the 740e need?
The 3.7kW onboard charger in the 740e iPerformance is the ceiling for AC charging, regardless of what speed your wallbox or cable is rated to. A standard 7.4kW Type 2 cable provides everything this car can use and is the sensible, cost-effective choice. There is no benefit to a 22kW three-phase cable with this car.
For a luxury saloon that spends most of its time on a home driveway, a 5m cable gives enough reach for typical setups. If your charging point is on the other side of the car from the inlet, or set further back from your parking position, a 7m or 10m cable prevents awkward angles. Cable length is more about convenience than speed here.
A 5m cable suits most driveways. Consider 7m or 10m if your wallbox requires the cable to travel further around the car.
What does it cost to charge?
A full charge of the 9.2kWh battery costs roughly 70p on an off-peak EV tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, and around £2.50 at a standard rate of around 27p per kWh. These sums are low enough that daily charging is a no-brainer if you want to maximise the electric miles. Check current tariffs, as rates vary.

BMW 740e FAQs
Good
questions.
Still not sure? Our team will confirm the right cable for your vehicle.
Contact usWhat charging cable does the BMW 740e need?+−
The BMW 740e has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on single-phase AC at up to 3.7kW.
Can the BMW 740e charge at 22kW?+−
No, the BMW 740e has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 3.7kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.
What length charging cable should I get?+−
5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.
What charging cable does the BMW 740e G11 need?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The 740e iPerformance has a Type 2 inlet and charges at up to 3.7kW single-phase. A 7.4kW cable is perfectly adequate; a 22kW three-phase cable adds cost without any benefit on this car.
Can the BMW 740e G11 rapid charge on DC?+−
No. The 740e iPerformance has no DC rapid charging port. It is AC only, using the Type 2 inlet at up to 3.7kW. Public fast chargers and rapids require CCS or CHAdeMO, neither of which this car supports.
How long does the BMW 740e take to charge at home?+−
At 3.7kW on a wallbox, the 9.2kWh battery takes around 2.5 hours from empty. Even a standard domestic socket will charge it overnight, though a wallbox is quicker and more convenient for regular use.
What length cable is right for the BMW 740e G11?+−
A 5m cable covers most domestic setups. If your wallbox is set well back from where the car parks, or the cable needs to loop further around the car, a 7m or 10m lead prevents unnecessary strain on the connector and makes daily charging easier.
