BMW 745e
Charging cable
Full AC charging speed for your car.
Why this fits your 745e+−
The BMW 745e has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 3.7kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.

How long does it take?
Charging
the BMW 745e.
The BMW 745e is the long-wheelbase plug-in hybrid in the G12 7 Series family, on sale in the UK from 2019 to 2022. It combines a six-cylinder petrol engine with a 12kWh electric battery to offer a useful electric-only range for shorter journeys, delivered in the space and comfort of a flagship luxury saloon. Charging is through a Type 2 inlet, so you need a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC charging points.
The 745e's onboard AC charger works at 3.7kW on a single phase. There is no DC rapid charging port on this model, which means AC charging is your only route to adding electric miles. The 12kWh battery is relatively compact and fully charges in a few hours at this rate, which makes it well suited to overnight top-ups or a charge during a long stop.
Estimates based on battery size and charge power. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.
7.4 kW or 22 kW?
Which cable does
the 745e need?
Since the 745e draws a maximum of 3.7kW from any AC source, the rated capacity of your cable or wallbox makes no difference to charging speed. A 7.4kW Type 2 cable comfortably covers this car's requirements, and a 22kW three-phase cable brings no advantage in this context. Save the extra cost for a car that can actually use it.
For day-to-day use with a long-wheelbase saloon, a 5m cable is the standard starting point. If your wallbox is positioned away from where the car normally sits, or the cable has to reach further around the car's length, a 7m or 10m lead prevents strain on the connector and makes plugging in easier each evening.
A 5m cable suits most driveways and home wallboxes. If your wallbox is set back from where you park, or you park with the charging port on the far side from the socket, a 7m or 10m lead gives more reach. The 745e is a long saloon, so measure the distance if space is tight.
What does it cost to charge?
Filling the 12kWh battery from empty costs roughly 90p on an off-peak EV tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, or around £3.25 on a standard domestic rate of around 27p per kWh. The cost is low enough to make daily charging worthwhile even on short trips. Tariffs vary, so check your current rate.

BMW 745e FAQs
Good
questions.
Still not sure? Our team will confirm the right cable for your vehicle.
Contact usWhat charging cable does the BMW 745e need?+−
The BMW 745e has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on single-phase AC at up to 3.7kW.
Can the BMW 745e charge at 22kW?+−
No, the BMW 745e has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 3.7kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.
What length charging cable should I get?+−
5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.
What cable does the BMW 745e need for charging?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC points. The 745e charges at up to 3.7kW single-phase. A 7.4kW cable is the right choice; a 22kW three-phase cable is not useful on this car.
Does the BMW 745e have DC rapid charging?+−
No. The 745e G12 is a plug-in hybrid with no DC rapid charging port. Charging is AC only via the Type 2 inlet at up to 3.7kW. It cannot use CCS or CHAdeMO public rapid chargers.
How long does a full charge take on the BMW 745e?+−
At 3.7kW, the 12kWh battery takes around 3 to 3.5 hours from empty. Left plugged in overnight you will always wake to a full charge. A standard 3-pin socket is considerably slower and best kept as a backup.
What cable length do I need for the BMW 745e?+−
A 5m cable works for most driveways. Given the 745e's long-wheelbase dimensions, a 7m cable gives more flexibility if the wallbox and the charging inlet end up further apart than on a shorter car.
