BMW i4
Charging cable
Charges about 50% faster on 22 kW public posts than a 7.4 kW cable.
Why this fits your i4+−
The BMW i4 has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 11kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 11kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.
Which BMW i4 versions does it fit?+
This cable fits every BMW i4, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:
- BMW i4 eDrive35
- BMW i4 eDrive40
- BMW i4 xDrive40
- BMW i4 M50
Whichever i4 trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?
Charging
the BMW i4.
The BMW i4 is a four-door electric fastback built on BMW's CLAR architecture and on sale in the UK since 2021 as the G26 generation. The UK range covers the eDrive35, eDrive40, xDrive40, and high-performance M50, all sharing an 83.9kWh gross battery. The i4 uses a Type 2 inlet for AC charging alongside a CCS port for rapid DC; when you connect at home or at a public AC charge point, the lead you supply is a Type 2 to Type 2 cable.
BMW fits the i4 with an 11kW three-phase onboard AC charger as standard across the range. DC rapid charging capability varies by trim, reaching up to around 205kW on the M50, with the eDrive40 and xDrive40 slightly below that. Rapid DC always uses the station's own tethered CCS cable rather than anything you carry.
All i4 variants share the same 83.9kWh battery, so home charge times are consistent across trims. DC speed varies by model. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.
7.4 kW or 22 kW?
Which cable does
the i4 need?
The i4's onboard charger is rated at 11kW on three phases. In most UK homes the supply is single-phase, which caps AC charging at 7.4kW no matter which cable is used. A 7.4kW Type 2 lead gives the full speed that a standard home setup can deliver, and it is the practical choice for the majority of i4 owners.
A three-phase-rated cable earns its place only if you have a three-phase incoming supply at home, which is uncommon in UK residential properties, or if you frequently use 22kW public AC charge points. In those situations the i4 will pull its full 11kW. On a single-phase wallbox, a 22kW cable charges at exactly the same 7.4kW rate as a standard 7.4kW lead, so the extra cost buys nothing beyond potential future-proofing.
What does it cost to charge?
Filling the 83.9kWh battery from empty costs roughly £6 on an off-peak EV tariff at around 7.5p per kWh, and around £23 at a standard domestic rate of around 27p per kWh. Overnight charging on a dedicated EV tariff is by far the most cost-effective approach. Public rapid charging is a different matter, typically 45p to 80p per kWh, so it works best as a top-up on longer runs rather than a regular habit. Check current tariff rates, as these change frequently.

BMW i4 FAQs
Good
questions.
Still not sure? Our team will confirm the right cable for your vehicle.
Contact usWhat charging cable does the BMW i4 need?+−
The BMW i4 has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on up to three-phase AC at up to 11kW.
What length charging cable should I get?+−
5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.
What cable does the BMW i4 need for home charging?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable suits every i4 variant. The i4 has a Type 2 AC inlet, matching virtually all UK wallboxes and public AC charge points. For most owners on a standard single-phase supply, a 7.4kW cable is the right pick. A three-phase cable only adds anything if your property has a three-phase supply or you use 22kW public AC chargers regularly.
Can the BMW i4 charge at 22kW?+−
No. The i4's onboard AC charger is rated at 11kW on three phases, so 11kW is the maximum it can accept on AC regardless of what cable is connected. On a standard single-phase UK home supply the car charges at 7.4kW, because the supply itself is the limiting factor. A 22kW cable cannot override either of those limits.
How long does a BMW i4 take to charge at home?+−
On a 7.4kW home wallbox, the 83.9kWh battery takes around 11 to 12 hours from empty to full, comfortably within an overnight window. On a three-phase 11kW charger the time shortens to around 7 to 8 hours. A three-pin granny charger at 2.3kW is a slow backup option, taking well over 30 hours, so it is not suited to regular use.
What length cable should I buy for a BMW i4?+−
A 5m cable covers most home driveways and is straightforward to store. If your wallbox is installed some distance from where the i4 typically sits, or you regularly park with the charging port further from the socket, a 7m or 10m cable removes any awkward stretching. Heavier longer cables are worth the inconvenience if your setup demands the reach.
