BMW iX3
Charging cable
Charges about 50% faster on 22 kW public posts than a 7.4 kW cable.
Why this fits your iX3+−
The BMW iX3 has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 11kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 11kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.
Which BMW iX3 versions does it fit?+
This cable fits every BMW iX3, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:
- BMW iX3 Premier Edition
- BMW iX3 Premier Edition Pro
- BMW iX3 M Sport
- BMW iX3 M Sport Pro
Whichever iX3 trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?
Charging
the BMW iX3.
The BMW iX3 is a mid-size electric SUV offered in the UK from 2020 as the G08 generation, spanning trims from the Premier Edition through to the M Sport Pro. It shares its exterior with the X3 combustion model but runs a dedicated electric drivetrain with an 80kWh gross battery (around 74kWh usable). Charging uses a Type 2 inlet for AC and a CCS port for rapid DC; the lead you bring to a wallbox or public AC charge point is a Type 2 to Type 2 cable.
The onboard AC charger across all iX3 variants is rated at 11kW on three phases. DC rapid charging reaches up to 150kW using the station's own tethered CCS cable. Note that the first-generation G08 iX3 covers production to 2024; a new-generation Neue Klasse iX3 is expected to follow later with a different specification.
All G08 iX3 variants share the 80kWh gross battery and 11kW AC rate. DC speed tops out at 150kW across the range. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.
7.4 kW or 22 kW?
Which cable does
the iX3 need?
The iX3's 11kW onboard AC charger needs three-phase power to reach its rated speed. UK home supplies are almost always single-phase, capping home charging at 7.4kW regardless of the cable. For the vast majority of iX3 owners, a 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable covers everything their home setup can deliver, and it is the sensible, cost-effective choice.
Upgrading to a 22kW cable makes sense only if you have access to a three-phase supply, whether at home or at commercial premises, or if you regularly use 22kW public AC charge points. In those situations the iX3 will charge at 11kW, not 22kW, because the car's onboard charger caps out there. On a single-phase connection the cable rating is irrelevant: 7.4kW is the ceiling and both cable types deliver it equally.
What does it cost to charge?
Filling the 80kWh battery from empty costs roughly £6 on an off-peak EV tariff at around 7.5p per kWh, and around £22 at a standard domestic rate of around 27p per kWh. Routine overnight charging on a dedicated EV tariff keeps running costs manageable. Public rapid charging at 45p to 80p per kWh is a useful option for longer journeys but expensive as a substitute for home charging. Tariffs change, so check current rates when budgeting.

BMW iX3 FAQs
Good
questions.
Still not sure? Our team will confirm the right cable for your vehicle.
Contact usWhat charging cable does the BMW iX3 need?+−
The BMW iX3 has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on up to three-phase AC at up to 11kW.
What length charging cable should I get?+−
5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.
What cable does the BMW iX3 need for home charging?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The iX3 has a Type 2 AC inlet, the same as virtually all UK home wallboxes and public AC charge points. For most owners on a single-phase home supply, a 7.4kW cable is the practical choice. A three-phase cable only adds value if you have three-phase power at your property or regularly charge at 22kW public AC points.
Can the BMW iX3 charge at 22kW?+−
No. The iX3's onboard AC charger is rated at 11kW on three phases, so 11kW is the maximum AC charging rate whatever cable is used. On a typical single-phase home supply the car charges at 7.4kW. A 22kW cable cannot push the iX3 above 11kW, and even that requires a three-phase supply.
How long does a BMW iX3 take to charge at home?+−
On a 7.4kW wallbox, charging the 80kWh battery from empty takes around 11 hours, fitting neatly into an overnight window. On a three-phase 11kW charger that drops to around 7 to 8 hours. A three-pin socket at around 2.3kW is a slow backup at roughly 35 hours from empty and is best avoided as a regular option.
Is the BMW iX3 the same as the new Neue Klasse iX3?+−
No. The G08 iX3 covered here is the first-generation model produced from 2020 to 2024. The Neue Klasse iX3 is a separate, next-generation model with a different platform and specification. If you have a newer Neue Klasse model, check its specific charging data before buying a cable, as the spec may differ.
