BMW M5
Charging cable
Full AC charging speed for your car.
Why this fits your M5+−
The BMW M5 has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 7.4kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.

Charging
the BMW M5.
The BMW M5 G90/G99 is the first M5 to arrive as a plug-in hybrid, launched in 2024 as both a saloon (G90) and Touring estate (G99). It uses a large 22.1kWh gross battery alongside a twin-turbocharged V8, giving a meaningful electric-only range as well as the M5's traditional performance. Charging at home or on public AC infrastructure is through a Type 2 inlet, so the cable you carry is a standard Type 2 to Type 2 lead.
The M5's onboard AC charger accepts up to 7.4kW on a single phase. There is no DC rapid charging port on this model, which is worth noting for longer trips: you rely on AC charging only. At 7.4kW, the 22.1kWh battery takes around three hours to charge fully, which suits an overnight home session or a longer stop at a destination charger.
Estimates based on battery size and charge power. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.
7.4 kW or 22 kW?
Which cable does
the M5 need?
The M5's 7.4kW single-phase AC charger sets the ceiling for how quickly you can charge at home. Any wallbox and cable combination rated to 7.4kW or above delivers the car's full onboard rate, so a standard 7.4kW Type 2 cable is the practical and cost-efficient choice. You do not need a 22kW three-phase cable: the M5 G90 is single-phase only, so a 22kW cable charges at exactly the same speed as a 7.4kW one.
A 5m cable handles most home setups. Because the M5 is a large car, the cable may need to travel further depending on where your wallbox sits in relation to where the car parks, so a 7m lead can be a worthwhile step up. For regular use, leaving the M5 on charge overnight covers the full battery without any rush.
A 5m cable works for most driveways. Given the M5's size, a 7m cable is a sensible upgrade if your wallbox is set further back or the cable runs along the length of the car.
What does it cost to charge?
Charging the 22.1kWh battery from empty costs roughly £1.65 on an off-peak EV tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, or around £6 at a standard domestic rate of around 27p per kWh. For a car with running costs typically associated with a large V8, the electric-only option on short commutes is one of the more appealing ownership angles. Always check current rates.

BMW M5 FAQs
Good
questions.
Still not sure? Our team will confirm the right cable for your vehicle.
Contact usWhat charging cable does the BMW M5 need?+−
The BMW M5 has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on single-phase AC at up to 7.4kW.
Can the BMW M5 charge at 22kW?+−
No, the BMW M5 has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 7.4kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.
What length charging cable should I get?+−
5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.
What charging cable does the BMW M5 G90 need?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC points. The M5 G90 charges at up to 7.4kW single-phase. A 7.4kW cable delivers the car's full AC speed. A 22kW three-phase cable offers no advantage because the M5 is single-phase only.
Can the BMW M5 G90 rapid charge on DC?+−
No. The G90 M5 and G99 M5 Touring have no DC rapid charging port. Charging is AC only via the Type 2 inlet at up to 7.4kW. For journeys beyond the electric range you rely on the petrol engine.
How long does the BMW M5 G90 take to charge at home?+−
At 7.4kW on a wallbox, the 22.1kWh battery takes around 3 hours from empty to full. Plugging in overnight comfortably restores full electric range. A 3-pin socket works as a backup but is much slower at around 10 hours.
Do I need a 22kW cable for the BMW M5 G90?+−
No. The M5 G90 has a single-phase onboard charger rated to 7.4kW. A 22kW cable cannot charge the car any faster than 7.4kW, because the car itself limits the rate. A standard 7.4kW Type 2 cable is all you need.
