Why this fits your X5 xDrive45e+

The BMW X5 xDrive45e has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 7.4kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.

Which BMW X5 xDrive45e versions does it fit?+

This cable fits every BMW X5 xDrive45e, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:

  • BMW X5 xDrive45e Xline
  • BMW X5 xDrive45e M Sport
  • BMW X5 xDrive45e M Sport Black Vermilion Edition

Whichever X5 xDrive45e trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?

Charging
the BMW X5 xDrive45e.

The BMW X5 xDrive45e is the G05 generation plug-in hybrid, on sale in the UK from 2019 to 2023. It succeeds the F15 xDrive40e with a significantly larger 24kWh gross battery and a six-cylinder petrol engine, delivering a more competitive electric-only range for everyday use. Like the rest of BMW's current PHEV range, it charges through a Type 2 inlet at home or at public AC stations, using a Type 2 to Type 2 cable.

The onboard AC charger in the G05 X5 xDrive45e accepts up to 7.4kW single-phase. There is no DC rapid charging port on this model. At 7.4kW, the 24kWh battery takes around three to three and a half hours from empty, which fits comfortably within an overnight charge or a longer daytime stop.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the X5 xDrive45e need?

The X5 xDrive45e charges at up to 7.4kW single-phase, and this is the rate your cable needs to match. A 7.4kW Type 2 cable delivers the car's full onboard speed, making it the practical choice for most owners. A 22kW three-phase cable does not increase the charge rate on this car because the onboard charger is single-phase only, capped at 7.4kW.

For a large SUV on a typical home driveway, a 5m cable is a reasonable starting point, though many owners of larger vehicles find a 7m or 10m lead gives better day-to-day practicality. If your wallbox is mounted near the front of the garage or driveway and the car parks some distance away, the extra length removes the need to angle the cable awkwardly.

A 5m cable suits many setups, but a 7m or 10m lead is worth considering for larger driveways or where the wallbox is set further from where the car parks.

What does it cost to charge?

Charging the 24kWh battery from empty costs roughly £1.80 on an off-peak EV tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, or around £6.50 at a standard domestic rate of around 27p per kWh. For a premium large SUV, keeping the battery topped up at home and covering local journeys on electricity makes a noticeable difference to running costs. Check current tariff rates.

Good
questions.

Contact us
What charging cable does the BMW X5 xDrive45e need?+

The BMW X5 xDrive45e has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on single-phase AC at up to 7.4kW.

Can the BMW X5 xDrive45e charge at 22kW?+

No, the BMW X5 xDrive45e has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 7.4kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What cable does the BMW X5 xDrive45e need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The G05 X5 xDrive45e has a Type 2 inlet and charges at up to 7.4kW single-phase. A 7.4kW cable gives the full home charging speed. A 22kW cable brings no benefit as the car is single-phase only.

Does the BMW X5 xDrive45e have DC rapid charging?+

No. The G05 xDrive45e is a plug-in hybrid with no CCS or DC rapid charging port. Charging is AC only through the Type 2 inlet at up to 7.4kW. For longer trips, the six-cylinder petrol engine takes over.

How long does the BMW X5 xDrive45e take to charge at home?+

At 7.4kW on a wallbox, the 24kWh battery takes around 3 to 3.5 hours from empty. That easily fits an overnight session, and covers the full battery before a morning commute if you plug in after dinner.

What is the best cable length for the BMW X5 xDrive45e?+

A 5m cable works for many driveways, but the X5's size makes a 7m or 10m lead more practical in setups where the wallbox is not directly alongside where the car parks. The extra length also lets you angle the cable more comfortably.
