Why this fits your Born+

The Cupra Born has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 11kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 11kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.

Which Cupra Born versions does it fit?+

This cable fits every Cupra Born, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:

  • Cupra Born V1
  • Cupra Born V2
  • Cupra Born V3
  • Cupra Born VZ
  • Cupra Born e-Boost

Whichever Born trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Cupra Born.

The Cupra Born is a performance-focused electric hatchback built on Volkswagen's MEB platform, a close relation of the ID.3. It has been on sale in the UK from 2021 and comes in two main battery configurations: a 58kWh version with DC charging at around 120kW, and a larger 77kWh version capable of up to 135kW or more depending on the specific variant. All Born models use a Type 2 inlet for AC charging and a CCS port for DC rapid sessions.

For daily charging at home or at a public AC point, you bring a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The Born's onboard AC charger is rated at 11kW on three phases across all variants. DC rapid charging uses the charger's own tethered CCS cable rather than anything you purchase yourself, so your portable cable is for AC use only.

Select your battery above. The 77kWh Born has a longer WLTP range and slightly faster DC speeds, but both variants share the same 11kW onboard AC charger. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the Born need?

The Born's 11kW three-phase onboard charger is one of its genuine strengths for AC charging, but it needs the right conditions to matter. On a typical UK single-phase home supply the AC charge rate is capped at 7.4kW, so a 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable gives the full speed your home wallbox can deliver. For most owners, this is the cable to buy.

A 22kW rated cable unlocks the Born's full 11kW AC capability, but only at a three-phase supply or a 22kW public AC charger, both of which are relatively uncommon for UK home users. On a single-phase home connection the Born charges at 7.4kW regardless of cable rating, so the 22kW cable is a worthwhile upgrade if you regularly use 22kW public AC points or have three-phase at home, but not otherwise.

What does it cost to charge?

Filling the 77kWh battery from empty costs roughly £5.75 to £6 on an off-peak EV tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, and around £21 at a standard rate of about 27p per kWh. The 58kWh version is cheaper per fill at roughly £4.35 off-peak and around £16 at standard rates. Overnight charging on an off-peak tariff keeps the Born cheap to run day to day. Public rapid chargers are far costlier per kWh and are best reserved for longer journeys. Check current tariff rates.

Contact us
What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What charging cable does the Cupra Born need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC charge points. The onboard AC charger is rated at 11kW on three phases, but a 7.4kW cable delivers the full speed most UK home setups can provide. A 5m cable suits most driveways. Choose a 22kW three-phase cable if you use 22kW public AC chargers regularly.

Can the Cupra Born charge at 22kW?+

No. The Born's onboard AC charger is limited to 11kW, so it cannot draw more than that regardless of the cable or charge point rating. At a 22kW public AC charger with a 22kW cable, the Born will pull 11kW on a three-phase supply. On a standard UK single-phase home wallbox it charges at 7.4kW.

How long does the Cupra Born take to charge at home?+

On a 7.4kW home wallbox, the 58kWh version takes around eight hours from empty and the 77kWh around ten and a half hours. Both work as overnight charges. On a 22kW public AC point with a three-phase supply, the Born's 11kW onboard charger brings those times down to roughly five and a half and seven hours respectively.

What length cable do I need for the Cupra Born?+

A 5m Type 2 to Type 2 cable covers most driveways and standard public charging bays. If the wallbox is positioned well away from where you normally park, or you find the cable reaches at a tight angle, a 7m lead removes the awkwardness and makes daily charging more relaxed.
