Charge speeds

Across the Cupra range.

Every Cupra here uses a Type 2 inlet, so one Type 2 to Type 2 cable fits the range. On-board AC charging ranges from about 3.6kW to 11kW depending on the model. A cable never charges faster than your car's on-board charger or your home supply allows, so on a standard single-phase UK home a 7.4 kW cable gives the full speed available.

Speeds are on-board AC limits. Rapid DC uses the station's own cable.

Charging guide

Charging
your Cupra.

Cupra's electrified range runs from the Born and Raval full electrics through to the Tavascan BEV and a set of eHybrid plug-in hybrids: the Formentor eHybrid, Leon eHybrid and Terramar eHybrid. Every Cupra uses a Type 2 inlet, so they all take a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging.

What changes between models is how fast each one charges on AC, which is what decides whether a 7.4kW cable or a larger one is worth buying. Pick your model below for its exact charging times and recommended cable, or read the brand-wide guidance underneath.

What charging cable does a Cupra need?

Every Cupra EV and plug-in hybrid charges through a Type 2 inlet, so the lead you need is a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. A 5m length suits most driveways and wallboxes; 7m or 10m is worth it for on-street parking or a wallbox that sits well away from the car.

The full electric Cupras, including the Born, Raval and Tavascan, have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger. The Terramar eHybrid also has an 11kW three-phase charger. Almost all UK homes are single-phase, which caps home charging at 7.4kW regardless of the cable, so for most owners a 7.4kW cable delivers the full speed available at home. A 22kW rated cable only earns its cost if you have a three-phase supply or regularly use 22kW public AC charge points.

The Formentor eHybrid and Leon eHybrid both charge at 3.6kW on AC via a single-phase onboard charger. For these models a 7.4kW cable is already more than the car can draw, so there is no reason to buy a bigger one. Their small batteries will also charge fully from a 3-pin granny charger if you prefer to keep the Type 2 cable for public charge points. In short, a single 5m 7.4kW Type 2 cable suits the entire Cupra range.

Do all Cupras use a Type 2 charging cable?+

Yes. Every Cupra model, from the Born and Tavascan full electrics to the Formentor and Leon eHybrids, uses a Type 2 inlet. They all take the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging, and no Cupra needs a Type 1 cable.

What charging cable does a Cupra Born or Tavascan need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, 5m for most driveways. Both have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger, but on a standard single-phase UK home they charge at 7.4kW. A 7.4kW cable gives you the full speed available at home. Only choose a 22kW cable if you have a three-phase supply or use 22kW public AC points regularly.

What cable does a Cupra Formentor or Leon eHybrid need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. Both eHybrid models charge at 3.6kW on AC, so a standard 7.4kW cable is more than enough. Their compact batteries also charge fully overnight from a 3-pin granny charger if you want to keep the Type 2 lead for public points.

Can a Cupra charge at 22kW?+

No Cupra reaches 22kW on AC. The Born, Raval, Tavascan and Terramar eHybrid top out at 11kW on three phases, and the Formentor and Leon eHybrids are lower. On a normal single-phase UK home every Cupra charges at 7.4kW or less, so a 22kW cable only benefits those with a three-phase supply or regular access to 22kW public AC points.

What length cable do I need for my Cupra?+

5m suits most home wallboxes and public charge points. Step up to 7m or 10m if you park on the street, share a charger, or your wallbox sits far from the car's charging port. Buy the shortest length that reaches comfortably, as longer cables cost more and are heavier to coil.
