Charging guide

Charging
your McLaren.

McLaren's only plug-in model is the Artura, a mid-engined V6 hybrid supercar with a 7.4kWh battery. The Artura uses a Type 2 inlet, so it takes a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging. The battery is relatively small and the onboard AC charger is rated at 3.3kW, so charging is straightforward and unhurried.

Because the Artura charges at just 3.3kW on AC, the cable choice is simple: any standard Type 2 to Type 2 cable covers its full capability. There is no need to consider three-phase or higher-rated cables for this model. Pick your model below for exact charging times or read the guidance underneath.

What charging cable does a McLaren need?

The McLaren Artura charges through a Type 2 inlet, so you need a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. A 5m lead suits most home garages and wallboxes. The Artura's inlet is on the rear of the car, so measure your parking position against the wallbox location to decide whether 7m would be more comfortable.

The Artura's onboard AC charger is rated at 3.3kW single-phase. A standard 7.4kW cable is already more than the car can draw on AC, so there is no reason to buy a higher-rated cable. The 7.4kWh battery is compact and will charge fully in a few hours at 3.3kW, making it well suited to an overnight home charge.

A granny charger (3-pin 2.3kW) will also charge the Artura's battery, though more slowly. For regular overnight home charging a wallbox with a 7.4kW cable is faster and more convenient. In short, a single 5m 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the only AC lead you need for the McLaren Artura.

What charging cable does a McLaren Artura need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The Artura uses a Type 2 inlet and charges at 3.3kW single-phase on AC, so a standard 7.4kW cable is more than enough. There is no benefit in buying a larger or higher-rated cable for this model.

Does the McLaren Artura charge at 22kW or 11kW?+

No. The Artura's onboard AC charger is rated at 3.3kW single-phase. It cannot charge at 11kW or 22kW, and buying a higher-rated cable would make no difference to its charging speed. The small 7.4kWh battery charges fully in a few hours at 3.3kW.

Can a McLaren Artura use a 3-pin granny charger?+

Yes. The Artura charges at 3.3kW on AC, and a 3-pin granny charger at around 2.3kW is enough to top up its 7.4kWh battery, though it will take longer than a wallbox. A wallbox with a Type 2 cable is the more practical choice for regular home charging.

Does the McLaren Artura support DC rapid charging?+

No. The Artura is a plug-in hybrid with no DC rapid charge capability. AC charging via the Type 2 inlet at 3.3kW is the only way to charge it. Fast charging between journeys is not a feature of this model.

What length cable do I need for the McLaren Artura?+

5m suits most home garages and wallboxes. The Artura is a low sports car and the charging inlet is at the rear, so check the distance from your wallbox to the inlet before ordering. Step up to 7m if the run is tight, but keep the cable as short as practical to reduce weight and bulk when coiled.
