Why this fits your A250e+

The Mercedes-Benz A250e has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 7.4kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Mercedes-Benz A250e.

The Mercedes-Benz A250e is a compact PHEV hatchback produced from 2019 to 2023 as part of the W177 A-Class generation. It pairs a 1.3-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and a 15.6kWh battery, giving a meaningful electric-only range for urban driving before the petrol engine supplements on longer trips. The charging inlet is a standard Type 2 socket for AC, and unusually for a PHEV, the A250e also features a CCS port for DC charging at up to 24kW.

For AC charging at home or at a public wallbox, the cable you bring is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead. The A250e's onboard AC charger is rated at 7.4kW on a single phase. The CCS DC charging capability at up to 24kW is relatively rare among PHEVs and means a much faster top-up is possible at compatible public DC chargers, which supply their own tethered cable.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the A250e need?

The A250e charges at up to 7.4kW on a single phase, and a 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable delivers that rate in full from any compatible home wallbox or public AC post. There is no three-phase AC charging on this car, so a 22kW cable adds no benefit for AC charging. The cable you buy covers all AC top-ups at home or at public slow and fast AC points.

The A250e's DC charging capability (up to 24kW via CCS) is handled by the station's own tethered cable at public DC charge points, not by a cable you carry. For the purpose of choosing an AC cable, a standard 7.4kW 5m lead is ideal. A 7m cable may be useful if your home wallbox is positioned some distance from your usual parking spot.

What does it cost to charge?

Filling the 15.6kWh battery from empty costs around £1.20 at an off-peak rate of around 7.5p per kWh, or around £4 at a standard rate of roughly 27p. Given the small battery, home charging is very affordable regardless of tariff, and a full charge is achieved in a couple of hours on a 7.4kW wallbox. Regular home top-ups significantly reduce petrol consumption on commuter use. Check current tariffs, as rates change.

Mercedes-Benz A250e FAQs

Good
questions.

Contact us
What charging cable does the Mercedes-Benz A250e need?+

The Mercedes-Benz A250e has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on single-phase AC at up to 7.4kW.

Can the Mercedes-Benz A250e charge at 22kW?+

No, the Mercedes-Benz A250e has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 7.4kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What cable does the Mercedes A250e need for charging?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for all AC charging. The A250e charges at up to 7.4kW on a single phase, and a 7.4kW rated cable delivers the full rate. For DC rapid charging (up to 24kW via CCS), the charge point provides its own tethered cable, so no DC lead is needed.

Can the Mercedes A250e rapid charge on DC?+

Yes, unusually for a PHEV. The A250e has a CCS port alongside the Type 2 socket and can charge at up to 24kW on DC. At a compatible DC public charger, the 15.6kWh battery can be replenished much faster than on AC. DC chargers supply their own tethered CCS cable, so this does not affect which Type 2 cable you buy.

How long does the Mercedes A250e take to charge at home?+

On a 7.4kW home wallbox, the 15.6kWh battery takes a little over two hours from empty. A 3-pin socket at roughly 2.3kW extends that to around seven hours. For most drivers, an overnight charge or plugging in during a parked period at work gives a full battery ready for daily EV use.

Does the A250e support 22kW AC charging?+

No. The onboard AC charger is rated at 7.4kW on a single phase. There is no three-phase AC charging capability, so a 22kW cable brings no speed advantage. A 7.4kW single-phase cable is the correct and most cost-effective choice for this car.
