Charge speeds

Across the Mercedes-Benz range.

Every Mercedes-Benz here uses a Type 2 inlet, so one Type 2 to Type 2 cable fits the range. On-board AC charging ranges from about 3.6kW to 11kW depending on the model. A cable never charges faster than your car's on-board charger or your home supply allows, so on a standard single-phase UK home a 7.4 kW cable gives the full speed available.

Speeds are on-board AC limits. Rapid DC uses the station's own cable.

Charging guide

Charging
your Mercedes-Benz.

Mercedes-Benz offers one of the broadest plug-in ranges in the UK, running from older PHEVs like the C350e and E350e through the current EQ family of full electrics, including the EQA, EQB, EQC, EQE, EQS, EQT, EQV and G580 EQ, plus a wide line-up of PHEV models such as the C300e, E300e, GLC300e and S580e. The good news for charging is that every Mercedes-Benz, old and new, uses a Type 2 inlet, so they all take the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging.

What changes between models is how fast each one charges on AC, which is what decides whether a 7.4kW cable or a larger one is worth buying. Pick your model below for its exact charging times and recommended cable, or read the brand-wide guidance underneath.

What charging cable does a Mercedes-Benz need?

Every Mercedes-Benz EV and plug-in hybrid charges through a Type 2 inlet, so the lead you need is a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. A 5m length suits most driveways and wallboxes; step up to 7m or 10m for on-street parking or a charge point that sits far from the car.

Many Mercedes-Benz models, including the full EQ range and newer PHEVs such as the C300e, E300e, GLC300e, CLE 300e and S580e, have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger. Almost all UK homes are single-phase, which caps home charging at 7.4kW regardless of the cable, so for most owners a 7.4kW cable delivers the full speed available at home. A 22kW rated cable is only worth buying if you have a three-phase supply or regularly use 22kW public AC points, where these models will pull their full 11kW.

Older Mercedes-Benz PHEVs, including the C350e, E350e, GLE500e, S500e and GLC350e, charge more slowly on AC at around 3.6kW. A 7.4kW cable is already more than these cars can draw, so there is no reason to pay for a bigger one. In short, a single 5m 7.4kW Type 2 cable suits the entire Mercedes-Benz range.

Do all Mercedes-Benz EVs and PHEVs use a Type 2 charging cable?+

Yes. Every Mercedes-Benz plug-in model, from the older C350e and E350e through the full EQ family and current PHEVs like the C300e and GLC300e, uses a Type 2 inlet. They all take the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging.

What charging cable does a Mercedes-Benz EQA or EQS need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, 5m for most driveways. Both have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger, but on a standard single-phase UK home they charge at 7.4kW. A 7.4kW cable gives you the full speed a home supply can provide. Only consider a 22kW cable if you have a three-phase supply or use 22kW public AC charge points regularly.

Can a Mercedes-Benz charge at 22kW on AC?+

No Mercedes-Benz model in the current range charges at 22kW on AC. The EQ models and newer PHEVs top out at 11kW on three phases. On a standard single-phase home supply, every Mercedes-Benz charges at 7.4kW or below, so a 22kW cable only delivers up to 11kW and only on a three-phase supply.

What cable does an older Mercedes-Benz PHEV like the C350e need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The C350e, E350e and similar older PHEVs charge at around 3.6kW on AC, so a standard 7.4kW cable is more than enough. Their small batteries also top up fully overnight from a 3-pin granny charger if you want to keep the Type 2 lead for public charge points.

What length cable do I need for my Mercedes-Benz?+

5m suits most home wallboxes and public charge points. Choose 7m or 10m if you park on the street, share a charger with another car, or your wallbox is far from the vehicle's charging port. Buy the shortest length that reaches comfortably, as longer cables cost more and are heavier to coil.
