Why this fits your G580 EQ+

The Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 11kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 11kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ.

The Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ is the fully electric version of the iconic G-Class off-roader, introduced on the W465 platform from 2024. It retains the recognisable boxy body and all-terrain capability while replacing the combustion engine with a 116kWh usable battery and four electric motors. DC rapid charging is supported at up to 200kW via CCS, and AC charging uses a Type 2 inlet: you bring a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC points.

The G580 EQ's onboard AC charger accepts up to 11kW on three phases. Given the 116kWh battery, DC rapid charging is the practical way to add meaningful range quickly on longer journeys, while AC charging suits overnight home or hotel topping up. As with any three-phase Mercedes EQ, a standard single-phase UK home supply limits AC charging to 7.4kW regardless of wallbox rating.

The G580 EQ's 116kWh battery is among the largest fitted to any current production vehicle. Overnight AC charging from a low state of charge may not fully recover the pack; plan accordingly, or use DC rapid charging for larger top-ups on trips. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the G580 EQ need?

The G580 EQ draws up to 11kW on three phases for AC charging. In most UK homes, the single-phase supply caps this at 7.4kW regardless of cable or wallbox rating. A 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the right fit for home charging on a standard supply: it delivers the full 7.4kW available without any cost overhead for unused capacity.

A 22kW cable makes sense if you have a three-phase supply at home or if your typical charging stops include 22kW public AC charge points. The G580 EQ will draw its full 11kW in those situations, which matters more on a 116kWh battery than it would on a smaller pack. On a single-phase connection the 22kW cable offers no speed benefit. The choice comes down to your supply type and where you charge most often.

What does it cost to charge?

Charging the 116kWh battery from empty costs around £8.70 on an off-peak EV tariff at roughly 7.5p per kWh, or around £31 at a standard domestic rate of roughly 27p per kWh. The large battery rewards use of a dedicated off-peak EV tariff, as the difference between tariff rates is substantial at this capacity. Public DC rapid charging costs far more per kWh than overnight home charging. Check current tariff rates before estimating running costs.

Good
questions.

Contact us
What charging cable does the Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ need?+

The Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on up to three-phase AC at up to 11kW.

Can the Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ charge at 22kW?+

Yes, the Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ has a three-phase onboard charger, so with a 22kW cable and a three-phase supply it can charge at up to 11kW.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What cable does the Mercedes G580 EQ need for charging?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC charge points. The G580 EQ's onboard AC charger accepts up to 11kW on three phases. On a single-phase home supply a 7.4kW cable delivers the full available speed. A 22kW cable only adds benefit if you have a three-phase supply at home or regularly use 22kW public AC points.

Can the Mercedes G580 EQ charge at 11kW at home?+

Only with a three-phase home supply, which is uncommon in UK residential properties. On a standard single-phase domestic supply, the G580 EQ is limited to 7.4kW for AC charging regardless of which wallbox or cable you use. A 22kW public AC charge point or a three-phase home setup is needed for the full 11kW rate.

How long does the Mercedes G580 EQ take to charge at home?+

On a 7.4kW single-phase home wallbox, the 116kWh battery takes around 16 to 17 hours from empty, which can exceed a standard overnight window. At 11kW on a three-phase supply that reduces to around 11 hours. Most G580 EQ owners will top up partially overnight and rely on DC rapid charging for substantial refills during longer journeys.

How fast does the Mercedes G580 EQ rapid charge?+

The G580 EQ supports DC rapid charging at up to 200kW via CCS. At a high-power charger, a 10 to 80 percent charge can be completed in roughly 30 to 35 minutes. DC rapid charging always uses the charge point's own tethered cable; you do not need to purchase a cable for DC charging.
