Why this fits your GLC300e+

The Mercedes-Benz GLC300e has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 11kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 11kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Mercedes-Benz GLC300e.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC300e is the plug-in hybrid version of Mercedes' popular mid-size SUV, introduced in X254 generation from 2022. It pairs a petrol engine with a generous 31.2kWh battery, giving a meaningful electric-only range before the combustion engine takes over. Like all current Mercedes PHEVs, the GLC300e uses a Type 2 inlet for AC charging, alongside a CCS port that supports DC rapid charging up to around 60kW.

For home charging and public AC points you need a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The GLC300e's onboard AC charger accepts up to 11kW on three phases, which is above the 7.4kW that a standard single-phase UK home supply can deliver. That distinction matters when choosing a cable, so it is worth understanding what it means in practice before you spend more than you need to.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the GLC300e need?

The GLC300e's onboard charger can pull up to 11kW when connected to a three-phase supply. However, virtually all UK homes are single-phase, which means home charging is capped at 7.4kW regardless of the cable's rating. On a 7.4kW home wallbox, the GLC300e's 31kWh battery takes under five hours from empty, which is well within a typical overnight window. For home use, a 7.4kW Type 2 cable is sufficient and the more cost-effective choice.

A 22kW cable adds nothing at home on a single-phase supply: the car still charges at 7.4kW. That said, the GLC300e supports DC rapid charging separately via its CCS port, using the charger's own tethered cable rather than one you buy. For AC charging only, the practical advice is a 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable in 5m for most driveways, stepping up to 7m or 10m if your wallbox is positioned well back from where you park.

A 5m cable suits most driveways. If your wallbox is set back from the parking spot, or the charging port ends up on the far side of the car from the wallbox, a 7m or 10m lead gives more comfort.

What does it cost to charge?

Charging the 31.2kWh battery from empty costs roughly £2 to £2.50 on an off-peak EV tariff at around 7.5p per kWh, and around £8 to £9 at a standard domestic rate of around 27p per kWh. Keeping the battery topped up overnight on a cheap EV tariff is straightforward with a 31kWh pack, as even a 7.4kW home wallbox fills it in well under five hours. Check current tariff rates before budgeting, as they change.

Good
questions.

Contact us
What charging cable does the Mercedes-Benz GLC300e need?+

The Mercedes-Benz GLC300e has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on up to three-phase AC at up to 11kW.

Can the Mercedes-Benz GLC300e charge at 22kW?+

Yes, the Mercedes-Benz GLC300e has a three-phase onboard charger, so with a 22kW cable and a three-phase supply it can charge at up to 11kW.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What charging cable does the Mercedes GLC300e need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC charge points. The GLC300e also has a CCS port for DC rapid charging, but that uses the charger's own tethered cable, not one you purchase separately. For AC charging at home, a 7.4kW cable in 5m is the sensible starting point for most drivers.

Can the GLC300e charge at 11kW at home?+

Only if your home has a three-phase supply, which is rare in the UK. On the standard single-phase supply found in most British homes, charging is capped at 7.4kW even though the GLC300e's onboard charger supports 11kW. At a three-phase public AC charge point the car will draw its full 11kW.

How long does the Mercedes GLC300e take to charge at home?+

On a 7.4kW home wallbox the 31.2kWh battery takes around four to four and a half hours from empty. That comfortably fits overnight. On a standard 3-pin domestic socket charging is much slower at around 2 to 3kW, so a dedicated wallbox is strongly recommended for regular use.

Does the GLC300e support DC rapid charging?+

Yes. The GLC300e has a CCS port that supports DC charging up to around 60kW. At a 50kW public rapid charger it can recover most of its range in under an hour. Rapid charging uses the charger's own tethered cable, not a cable you buy for home use.
