Why this fits your GLC350e+

The Mercedes-Benz GLC350e has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 3.6kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Mercedes-Benz GLC350e.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC350e was the plug-in hybrid variant of the first-generation GLC SUV, sold in X253 generation from 2016 to 2019. It combined a four-cylinder petrol engine with a small 8.7kWh battery, giving around 20 to 25 miles of electric-only range under favourable conditions. The charging inlet is Type 2, which is the same connector found on the vast majority of UK home wallboxes and public AC charge points.

To charge at home or at a public AC point, you need a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The GLC350e's onboard AC charger is rated at 3.6kW on a single phase, which reflects typical PHEV charging hardware of that era. The car does not support DC rapid charging, so all top-ups go through the AC inlet.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the GLC350e need?

The GLC350e's onboard charger is limited to 3.6kW, so the speed of charging is determined entirely by the car's own hardware, not by the cable. A 7.4kW or 22kW rated cable will not charge the car any faster: the car draws only what its charger can handle, which is 3.6kW. Even on a 7kW home wallbox, the GLC350e fills at its 3.6kW ceiling.

For this car, a standard 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable covers all AC charging scenarios without paying for extra capacity you cannot use. In 5m it reaches most home wallboxes comfortably; choose 7m or 10m if there is a longer run from the socket to where you park.

What does it cost to charge?

Filling the 8.7kWh battery from empty costs less than £1 at an off-peak tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, or around £2 to £2.50 at a standard domestic rate of around 27p per kWh. At 3.6kW, the battery takes roughly two and a half to three hours to charge, which fits easily into an evening. Frequent top-ups rather than one long charge each day is a practical approach to keep the electric range available. Check current tariff rates, as these change.

Good
questions.

Contact us
What charging cable does the Mercedes-Benz GLC350e need?+

The Mercedes-Benz GLC350e has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on single-phase AC at up to 3.6kW.

Can the Mercedes-Benz GLC350e charge at 22kW?+

No, the Mercedes-Benz GLC350e has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 3.6kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What cable does the Mercedes GLC350e need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, as the GLC350e has a Type 2 AC inlet. The onboard charger is limited to 3.6kW, so a 7.4kW cable is more than adequate. A 22kW three-phase cable offers no advantage on this car. Standard 5m length suits most driveways.

How long does the GLC350e take to charge?+

At its 3.6kW maximum AC charge rate, the 8.7kWh battery takes roughly two and a half to three hours from empty. A dedicated home wallbox makes the most of those hours. A 3-pin socket is slower still and not recommended for regular charging of any PHEV.

Does the GLC350e support DC rapid charging?+

No. The GLC350e is AC-only: it has no CCS or CHAdeMO port. All charging goes through the Type 2 inlet at up to 3.6kW. If you need faster charging, the later GLC300e (X254, 2022 onwards) supports DC up to 60kW and has a much larger battery.

What length cable do I need for the GLC350e?+

For most driveways, 5m is enough. If your wallbox is set further back from the car, or the charge point is on the opposite side from where you park, consider a 7m or 10m cable so you are not stretching it uncomfortably.
