Why this fits your GLE500e+

The Mercedes-Benz GLE500e has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 3.6kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Mercedes-Benz GLE500e.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE500e 4MATIC was the large SUV plug-in hybrid in Mercedes' W166 model range, sold from 2015 to 2018. It combined a V8 petrol engine with an 8.8kWh battery pack, representing an early-generation PHEV with a correspondingly modest electric-only range. Charging uses a standard Type 2 inlet, so it works with the same cables and charge points as more modern plug-in cars.

All charging on the GLE500e is through the AC inlet only: there is no DC rapid-charge port. The onboard AC charger is rated at 3.6kW single phase, which was typical for PHEVs of this vintage. You need a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC points.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the GLE500e need?

The GLE500e charges at 3.6kW regardless of what cable you connect. The onboard charger is the bottleneck, not the cable or the wallbox. A 7.4kW Type 2 cable more than covers the car's needs, and there is no benefit in choosing a 22kW three-phase cable for this vehicle. It is purely the car's own hardware that determines the charge rate.

For most users, a 5m 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the practical choice. If the distance from your wallbox to the car is particularly long, a 7m or 10m lead makes day-to-day charging less fiddly. Because the battery is small and charges quickly at 3.6kW, the length of time spent plugged in each day is modest in any case.

What does it cost to charge?

With an 8.8kWh battery, filling from empty costs well under £1 at an off-peak EV tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, and around £2 to £2.50 at a standard domestic rate of around 27p per kWh. At 3.6kW the battery reaches full in roughly two and a half hours, so an evening plug-in after work is typically sufficient. Check current tariff rates before budgeting.

Good
questions.

Contact us
What charging cable does the Mercedes-Benz GLE500e need?+

The Mercedes-Benz GLE500e has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on single-phase AC at up to 3.6kW.

Can the Mercedes-Benz GLE500e charge at 22kW?+

No, the Mercedes-Benz GLE500e has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 3.6kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What cable does the Mercedes GLE500e need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC charge points. The onboard charger is limited to 3.6kW, so a 7.4kW cable is the right match. A 22kW three-phase cable offers no speed benefit on this vehicle.

How long does the GLE500e take to charge at home?+

At its 3.6kW onboard AC charge rate, the 8.8kWh battery takes around two and a half hours from empty on a home wallbox. A 3-pin domestic socket is slower and not ideal for regular charging. Because the battery is relatively small, daily top-ups are quick and uncomplicated.

Does the GLE500e support DC rapid charging?+

No. The GLE500e has an AC-only inlet with no CCS or CHAdeMO port. All charging is through the Type 2 socket at up to 3.6kW. If fast DC charging is important, the later GLE PHEVs (2019 onwards, V167 generation) support DC up to 60kW.

What length cable do I need for the GLE500e?+

A 5m cable suits the majority of home driveways. If there is a longer run between your wallbox and where the car parks, or the charging socket ends up far from the wallbox, a 7m or 10m cable avoids unnecessary tension on the connector.
