Mercedes-Benz S500e
Charging cable
Full AC charging speed for your car.
Why this fits your S500e+−
The Mercedes-Benz S500e has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 3.6kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.

How long does it take?
Charging
the Mercedes-Benz S500e.
The Mercedes-Benz S500e was the first plug-in hybrid version of the S-Class, sold in W222 generation from 2014 to 2017. It was an early entrant in the large luxury saloon PHEV segment, pairing a V8 petrol engine with an 8.7kWh battery for a limited electric-only range. Despite its flagship status, the charging setup is straightforward: a standard Type 2 inlet for AC, with no DC rapid-charge capability.
For day-to-day charging at home or at a public AC point, a Type 2 to Type 2 cable is what you need. The S500e's onboard charger is rated at 3.6kW single phase, in line with the generation of PHEV technology fitted at the time. The small battery means it charges quickly even at that modest rate.
Estimates based on battery size and charge power. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.
7.4 kW or 22 kW?
Which cable does
the S500e need?
With a 3.6kW onboard charger, the S500e's charge rate is dictated entirely by the car's own hardware. Whether you connect a 7.4kW cable or a 22kW cable, the car draws only 3.6kW. A 7.4kW Type 2 cable handles everything this car needs, with no reason to spend more on a higher-rated lead.
Given the compact 8.7kWh battery and brisk two-hour charge time, cable length is the more practical consideration. A 5m Type 2 to Type 2 cable works well for most home setups. If the distance from the wallbox to the parked car is longer than usual, 7m or 10m gives more reach without straining the connector at either end.
What does it cost to charge?
The 8.7kWh battery costs less than £1 to charge from empty at an off-peak tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, and around £2 to £2.50 at a standard domestic rate of around 27p per kWh. At 3.6kW, charging from empty takes a little over two hours, which means a brief evening plug-in is all that is needed to start the next day with a full electric charge. Check current tariff rates as they can change.

Mercedes-Benz S500e FAQs
Good
questions.
Still not sure? Our team will confirm the right cable for your vehicle.
Contact usWhat charging cable does the Mercedes-Benz S500e need?+−
The Mercedes-Benz S500e has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on single-phase AC at up to 3.6kW.
Can the Mercedes-Benz S500e charge at 22kW?+−
No, the Mercedes-Benz S500e has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 3.6kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.
What length charging cable should I get?+−
5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.
What charging cable does the Mercedes S500e need?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The S500e uses a standard Type 2 AC inlet with a 3.6kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable covers the car's full charging capability, and there is no advantage in buying a 22kW or three-phase lead for this vehicle.
How long does the S500e take to charge at home?+−
At 3.6kW the 8.7kWh battery charges from empty in roughly two to two and a half hours on a home wallbox. On a standard 3-pin socket the rate is lower, around 2 to 2.3kW, adding an extra hour or so. A dedicated wallbox is the better option for regular use.
Does the S500e support DC rapid charging?+−
No. The S500e has an AC-only Type 2 inlet with no CCS or CHAdeMO port. All charging is done through AC at up to 3.6kW. Later S-Class PHEVs from the V223 generation (2020 onwards) added DC rapid charging capability.
What length cable suits the S500e?+−
A 5m cable is right for most driveways. If you park with the car further from the wallbox, or the charging socket on the car ends up on the far side from the supply, a 7m or 10m lead avoids any tension on the plug and makes the daily routine more comfortable.
