Why this fits your HS PHEV+

The MG HS PHEV has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 3.7kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.

How long does it take?

Charging
the MG HS PHEV.

The MG HS PHEV is MG's plug-in hybrid version of its popular family SUV, on sale in the UK from 2020. It pairs a petrol engine with a 16.6kWh battery, giving a usable electric-only range for urban and suburban driving. AC charging is via a Type 2 inlet at up to 3.7kW single-phase, and there is no DC rapid charging port on this model. The cable you need is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead.

Because the HS PHEV's onboard charger is limited to 3.7kW, the charging speed on a 7.4kW home wallbox is determined entirely by the car rather than the supply. A 7.4kW cable still delivers only 3.7kW to the battery. The advantage of the PHEV format is that the battery is small enough to top up quickly, so even the relatively slow AC charge rate keeps up with typical daily mileage.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the HS PHEV need?

The MG HS PHEV's onboard charger is rated at 3.7kW, which is well below the 7.4kW ceiling of a standard UK home wallbox. No cable or charger can push AC into the car faster than its internal charger allows, so the 3.7kW rate applies whether you use a 7.4kW cable or a 22kW cable. A standard 7.4kW Type 2 cable is the right pick and more than adequate for this vehicle.

At 3.7kW the 16.6kWh battery takes around 4 to 4.5 hours from empty. That is straightforward to fit into an evening or overnight charge. A 5m cable suits the majority of home driveways and public AC charge points. If your wallbox is further from the car, a 7m lead gives extra comfort without unnecessary bulk.

What does it cost to charge?

Filling the 16.6kWh battery from empty at an off-peak EV tariff of around 7.5p per kWh costs roughly £1.25. At a standard rate of around 27p per kWh the same charge costs around £4.50. Because the battery is modest in size, even a short charge adds meaningful range, and the cost per charge is low. Check current domestic tariff rates, as prices vary by supplier.

MG HS PHEV FAQs

Good
questions.

Contact us
Can the MG HS PHEV charge at 22kW?+

No, the MG HS PHEV has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 3.7kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What charging cable does the MG HS PHEV need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The HS PHEV has a Type 2 AC inlet and an onboard charger limited to 3.7kW. A standard 7.4kW Type 2 cable is the right choice: the car's onboard charger determines the charge rate, not the cable, so there is no benefit to a higher-rated lead. The HS PHEV has no DC rapid charging port.

Can the MG HS PHEV rapid charge?+

No. The MG HS PHEV does not have a DC rapid charging port. Charging is AC only, via the Type 2 inlet, at a maximum of 3.7kW. At that rate the 16.6kWh battery charges from empty in around 4 to 4.5 hours on a home wallbox. There is no way to speed up the process with a different cable or charger.

How long does the MG HS PHEV take to charge at home?+

On a 7.4kW wallbox the HS PHEV takes around 4 to 4.5 hours from empty, limited by the car's 3.7kW onboard charger. On a standard 3-pin socket at around 2.3kW the same charge takes around 7 hours. Topping up after shorter journeys keeps the charge time well under 2 hours, making daily plugging in very practical.

What length cable do I need for the MG HS PHEV?+

A 5m cable is sufficient for most home setups. If there is a reasonable distance between the wallbox and the car, or if the charging inlet ends up on the far side from the socket, a 7m lead removes any awkward stretching. For public AC charge points, 5m is generally adequate for the designated parking bays.
