Charge speeds

Across the MG range.

Every MG here uses a Type 2 inlet, so one Type 2 to Type 2 cable fits the range. On-board AC charging ranges from about 3.7kW to 11kW depending on the model. A cable never charges faster than your car's on-board charger or your home supply allows, so on a standard single-phase UK home a 7.4 kW cable gives the full speed available.

Speeds are on-board AC limits. Rapid DC uses the station's own cable.

Charging guide

Charging
your MG.

MG's electric range now spans 13 models, including the popular MG4 EV and MG4 Urban, the ZS EV, MG5 EV, S5 EV, MGS6 EV, the open-top Cyberster, the high-performance IM5 and IM6, the MGS9 PHEV, and the HS PHEV. Every MG on this list uses a Type 2 inlet, so they all take the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging.

Where MG models differ is in how fast they charge on AC, which is what decides whether a more powerful cable is worth buying. Some models top out at 6.6kW or 7kW on a single phase, while others have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger. Pick your model below for exact charge times and the recommended cable, or read the brand-wide guidance underneath.

What charging cable does a MG need?

Every MG EV and plug-in hybrid uses a Type 2 inlet, so the lead you need is a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. A 5m length works well for most driveways and home wallboxes; choose 7m or 10m for on-street parking or a wallbox set away from the car's charging port. No MG needs a Type 1 cable.

Several MG models, including the MG4 EV (newer variants), MG4 Urban, ZS EV (facelift), MGS6 EV, Cyberster, IM5 and IM6, have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger. On a standard single-phase UK home supply, charging is capped at 7.4kW regardless of the cable, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers the fastest charge your home can provide. A 22kW cable only pays off if you have a three-phase supply or regularly use 22kW public AC points.

Other MG models, including the MG4 EV (older variant), MG5 EV, ZS EV (original), S5 EV, HS PHEV and MGS9 PHEV, charge at between 3.7kW and 7kW on AC, all within what a standard 7.4kW cable can deliver. A single 5m 7.4kW Type 2 cable suits the whole MG range at home.

Do all MGs use a Type 2 charging cable?+

Yes. Every MG EV and plug-in hybrid in the current range uses a Type 2 inlet, from the MG4 EV and ZS EV to the Cyberster and IM5. They all take the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging, and no MG requires a Type 1 cable.

What charging cable does an MG4 EV need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, 5m for most driveways. Newer MG4 EV variants have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger, but on a standard single-phase home supply they charge at 7.4kW. A 7.4kW cable covers this fully; choose a 22kW cable only if you have a three-phase supply or use 22kW public AC points regularly.

Can an MG charge at 22kW?+

No MG model charges at 22kW on AC. The highest AC rate in the range is 11kW, found on the MG4 Urban, ZS EV facelift, Cyberster, IM5 and IM6, and only on a three-phase supply. On a standard UK single-phase home, every MG charges at 7.4kW or less.

What cable does the MG HS PHEV need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The HS PHEV charges at 3.7kW on AC, so a standard 7.4kW cable is more than sufficient. Its 16.6kWh battery also charges fully overnight using a 3-pin granny charger if you prefer to keep the Type 2 cable for use at public charge points.

What length cable do I need for my MG?+

5m suits most home wallboxes and public charge points. Step up to 7m or 10m if you park on-street, share a charger with another car, or your wallbox is positioned well away from the charging port. Buy the shortest length that comfortably reaches, as longer cables cost more and are heavier to carry.
