MG IM5
Charging cable
Charges about 50% faster on 22 kW public posts than a 7.4 kW cable.
Why this fits your IM5+−
The MG IM5 has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 11kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 11kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.
Which MG IM5 versions does it fit?+
This cable fits every MG IM5, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:
- MG IM5 Long Range
- MG IM5 Performance
- MG IM5 Standard Range
Whichever IM5 trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?
Charging
the MG IM5.
The MG IM5 is a large electric saloon sold in the UK under the MG brand from 2025, built by IM Motors. It comes in Standard Range, Long Range, and Performance variants. The Long Range and Performance models use a 100kWh battery on an 800V architecture, supporting up to approximately 396kW DC rapid charging. The Standard Range uses a 75kWh battery on a 400V system with lower DC capability. All variants charge on AC via a Type 2 inlet at up to 11kW on three phases.
For home wallbox and public AC charging, the cable needed is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead. The IM5's onboard AC charger supports 11kW on three phases across all variants. On a standard single-phase UK home supply the rate is capped at 7.4kW regardless of cable. DC rapid charging, at the very high rates the 800V Long Range and Performance models support, uses the charger's own tethered CCS cable.
Long Range and Performance use an 800V system with much higher DC capability. Standard Range is 400V with lower DC speed. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.
7.4 kW or 22 kW?
Which cable does
the IM5 need?
The IM5's 11kW three-phase onboard charger means a 22kW rated cable can unlock the full 11kW at a three-phase public AC charger. On a standard UK single-phase home wallbox the rate is limited to 7.4kW whatever cable you use, since the supply itself is the constraint. For home charging, a 7.4kW Type 2 cable is perfectly adequate and less expensive.
If you regularly use 22kW public AC charge points, whether at hotels, car parks, or service areas, a 22kW cable lets the IM5 draw its full 11kW at those posts rather than the 7.4kW a standard cable would deliver on the same charger. For primarily home-based charging, the 7.4kW cable covers day-to-day needs without any compromise.
What does it cost to charge?
Filling the 100kWh battery from empty at an off-peak EV tariff of around 7.5p per kWh costs roughly £7.50. At a standard rate of around 27p per kWh the same fill costs around £27. The 75kWh Standard Range comes in at roughly £5.60 and £20 respectively at the same rates. Overnight charging on a dedicated EV tariff keeps running costs low, while the 800V DC capability on Long Range and Performance models means motorway rapid charging stops are brief. Check current tariff rates.

MG IM5 FAQs
Good
questions.
Still not sure? Our team will confirm the right cable for your vehicle.
Contact usWhat length charging cable should I get?+−
5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.
What charging cable does the MG IM5 need?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. All IM5 variants use a Type 2 inlet for AC charging and support up to 11kW on three phases. For home charging on a single-phase wallbox a 7.4kW cable gives the full available rate of 7.4kW. A 22kW cable is worthwhile if you regularly use 22kW public AC charge points. DC rapid charging uses the charger's own tethered CCS cable.
Can the MG IM5 charge at 22kW?+−
No. The IM5's onboard AC charger is rated at 11kW, so 11kW is the maximum on AC regardless of the cable or charger. On a three-phase 22kW public AC point with a 22kW cable the car draws its 11kW maximum. On a standard single-phase UK home wallbox the rate is 7.4kW. No cable can push AC into the car beyond what the onboard charger supports.
How long does the MG IM5 take to charge at home?+−
On a 7.4kW home wallbox the 100kWh Long Range battery takes around 13 to 14 hours from empty, so overnight charging covers a full fill. The 75kWh Standard Range takes around 10 to 11 hours. DC rapid charging is very different: the 800V Long Range variant peaks at up to around 396kW, enabling fast top-ups on longer trips.
What length cable do I need for the MG IM5?+−
A 5m cable is the standard starting point and suits most home driveways. Because the IM5 is a long saloon, parking angle and wallbox position can affect how much cable reach you need. A 7m lead is a sensible upgrade if the wallbox is more than a couple of metres from where the car sits, giving comfortable slack without the cable pulling tight.
