MG IM6
Charging cable
Charges about 50% faster on 22 kW public posts than a 7.4 kW cable.
Why this fits your IM6+−
The MG IM6 has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 11kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 11kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.
Which MG IM6 versions does it fit?+
This cable fits every MG IM6, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:
- MG IM6 Long Range
- MG IM6 Performance
- MG IM6 Launch Edition
Whichever IM6 trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?
Charging
the MG IM6.
The MG IM6 is a large electric SUV sold in the UK under the MG brand from 2025, built by IM Motors. It comes in Standard Range, Long Range, and Launch Edition variants. The Long Range and Launch Edition use a 100kWh battery on an 800V platform, with DC rapid charging capability of up to approximately 396kW. A 75kWh Standard Range version with a 400V system is also offered. All variants charge via a Type 2 inlet for AC at up to 11kW on three phases.
For home and public AC charging, the cable you bring is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead. The IM6's 11kW three-phase onboard AC charger is consistent across the range, though on a typical single-phase UK home supply the charge rate is capped at 7.4kW regardless of the cable rating. DC rapid charging at the very high rates the 800V models support requires the charger's own tethered CCS cable, not one you carry.
Long Range and Launch Edition use an 800V system with very high DC capability. Standard Range is 400V with lower peak DC speed. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.
7.4 kW or 22 kW?
Which cable does
the IM6 need?
All IM6 variants can draw up to 11kW on a three-phase AC supply. At a 22kW public AC charge point, a 22kW rated cable lets the car access its full 11kW. With a 7.4kW cable at the same three-phase charger, the rate drops to 7.4kW, which adds time to a destination charge. For owners who regularly stop at 22kW public AC chargers, the heavier cable earns a real benefit.
At home on a standard single-phase UK supply the rate is 7.4kW whatever the cable, so there is no practical advantage to a 22kW lead for home charging. Given the IM6's large battery and high DC capability, most owners are likely to rely on home AC charging overnight and DC rapid charging for longer journeys, in which case a 7.4kW cable covers the home scenario entirely and the decision about a 22kW cable depends on public AC usage habits.
What does it cost to charge?
Charging the 100kWh battery from empty at an off-peak rate of around 7.5p per kWh costs roughly £7.50. At a standard rate of around 27p per kWh the same fill costs around £27. For the 75kWh Standard Range those figures are roughly £5.60 and £20. A nightly top-up on a cheap overnight tariff is the most economical approach for daily use. The 800V platform makes public rapid charging very fast, but public charging rates are substantially higher per kWh than home tariffs. Check current rates with your supplier.

MG IM6 FAQs
Good
questions.
Still not sure? Our team will confirm the right cable for your vehicle.
Contact usWhat length charging cable should I get?+−
5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.
What charging cable does the MG IM6 need?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The IM6 uses a Type 2 inlet for AC and supports up to 11kW on three phases. For home charging on a single-phase wallbox, a 7.4kW cable delivers the full available 7.4kW. A 22kW cable is beneficial if you use 22kW public AC charge points regularly, allowing the car to draw its full 11kW at those posts. DC rapid charging uses the charger's own tethered cable.
Can the MG IM6 charge at 22kW?+−
No. The IM6's onboard AC charger supports up to 11kW, not 22kW. On a three-phase 22kW public AC point the car draws its maximum of 11kW, not the full 22kW. On a standard single-phase home wallbox the rate is 7.4kW. A 22kW cable is still useful at three-phase AC points because it removes the cable as the limiting factor, but the car's charger remains capped at 11kW.
How long does the MG IM6 take to charge at home?+−
On a 7.4kW home wallbox the 100kWh Long Range battery takes around 13 to 14 hours from empty to full, making overnight charging the standard approach. The 75kWh Standard Range takes around 10 to 11 hours. DC rapid charging on the 800V Long Range peaks at around 396kW, making brief stops practical on motorway routes.
What length cable do I need for the MG IM6?+−
A 5m cable covers most home driveways. The IM6 is a large SUV, and depending on how it is parked and where the wallbox sits, the cable may need to run some distance to reach the inlet. A 7m lead provides useful extra reach and is worth choosing if there is any doubt about whether 5m will comfortably reach without stretching.
