MG MG5 EV
Charging cable
Full AC charging speed for your car.
Why this fits your MG5 EV+−
The MG MG5 EV has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 6.6kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.
Which MG MG5 EV versions does it fit?+
This cable fits every MG MG5 EV, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:
- MG MG5 EV Excite
- MG MG5 EV Exclusive
Whichever MG5 EV trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?
Charging
the MG MG5 EV.
The MG5 EV is Britain's first electric estate, a practical, family-sized load-lugger that was on sale from 2020 to 2024. It uses a Type 2 inlet for AC charging and a CCS port for rapid DC, so the cable you bring for home and public AC charging is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead. The Long Range version carries a 61kWh battery, while earlier Standard Range cars used a smaller pack.
AC charging on the MG5 is handled by a 6.6kW single-phase onboard charger, which is the ceiling regardless of what cable or wallbox you use. Rapid DC charging at up to 87kW uses the charger's own tethered cable, not a lead you supply.
The MG5's 6.6kW onboard charger sets the AC speed. A 7.4kW cable is more than enough. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.
7.4 kW or 22 kW?
Which cable does
the MG5 EV need?
The MG5's onboard AC charger is rated at 6.6kW on a single-phase supply, so it will never draw more than that on any home wallbox or public AC point. A 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the natural match: it covers the car's full AC speed with a little headroom, and works on any standard 7.4kW or 22kW public point. There is no benefit to buying a more expensive 22kW three-phase cable for this car.
For cable length, 5m suits most driveways and covers the majority of home wallbox setups. If your wallbox is mounted some distance from where you park, or the charging port ends up on the far side of the car from the cable, a 7m lead gives extra reach without the hassle of coiling excess cable. A 10m option is worth considering for awkward parking layouts or outbuildings.
What does it cost to charge?
Filling the 61kWh Long Range battery from empty costs roughly £5 on an off-peak EV tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, or around £16 on a standard rate of around 27p. Overnight charging on a dedicated EV tariff is comfortably the cheapest way to run an MG5. Public rapid sessions cost far more per kWh, so are best saved for longer journeys. Check current tariffs, as rates change regularly.

MG MG5 EV FAQs
Good
questions.
Still not sure? Our team will confirm the right cable for your vehicle.
Contact usWhat charging cable does the MG MG5 EV need?+−
The MG MG5 EV has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on single-phase AC at up to 6.6kW.
Can the MG MG5 EV charge at 22kW?+−
No, the MG MG5 EV has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 6.6kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.
What length charging cable should I get?+−
5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.
What charging cable does the MG5 EV need?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC points. The MG5's onboard charger is rated at 6.6kW single-phase, so a 7.4kW cable is the right choice and costs less than a 22kW three-phase option, which would deliver no extra speed on this car.
Can the MG5 EV charge at 22kW?+−
No. The MG5's onboard AC charger tops out at 6.6kW on a single-phase supply. Even on a 22kW public AC point, it will only draw up to 6.6kW. A 22kW rated cable offers no benefit over a standard 7.4kW lead for this vehicle.
How long does the MG5 EV take to charge at home?+−
On a 7.4kW home wallbox the 61kWh Long Range battery takes around 9 to 10 hours from empty, which is comfortably covered by an overnight charge. A standard 3-pin granny lead charges at roughly 2.3kW and would take around 27 hours, so it is best kept as an emergency backup.
What length cable do I need for the MG5 EV?+−
A 5m cable suits most home driveways and parking setups. If your wallbox is set back from the front of the drive, or you tend to park nose-in, a 7m or 10m lead gives extra flexibility without you needing to drag the cable across the car.
