Why this fits your i-MiEV+

The Mitsubishi i-MiEV has a Type 1 inlet and a single-phase 3.6kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.

Which Mitsubishi i-MiEV versions does it fit?+

This cable fits every Mitsubishi i-MiEV, because they all share the same Type 1 charging inlet. That includes:

  • Mitsubishi i-MiEV Keiko
  • Mitsubishi i-MiEV Sugata
  • Mitsubishi i-MiEV Tamashii

Whichever i-MiEV trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Mitsubishi i-MiEV.

The Mitsubishi i-MiEV is a compact electric hatchback that was sold in the UK between 2011 and 2015, making it one of the earliest mass-market BEVs available here. It is a small city car with a 16kWh battery, giving a WLTP-era range of around 80 to 100 miles on a full charge. The same car was also sold as the Peugeot iOn and Citroen C-Zero. Like other Japanese EVs of its generation, the i-MiEV uses a Type 1 (J1772) AC inlet for everyday charging, not the European Type 2 standard. For DC rapid charging, it has a CHAdeMO connector served by tethered cables at rapid chargers.

To charge at a home wallbox or at an AC public point, you need a Type 2 to Type 1 cable. The Type 2 end plugs into the charge post or wallbox; the smaller, round J1772 connector goes into the car. The i-MiEV's onboard AC charger is rated at 3.6kW on a single phase, so charge sessions are gentle. The 16kWh battery keeps costs and session times modest.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the i-MiEV need?

The i-MiEV's onboard charger draws 3.6kW at most, so a 7.4kW rated Type 2 to Type 1 cable is already running at half its rated capacity when the car is plugged in. There is no faster AC option for this car: even on a 22kW public AC unit, the i-MiEV will draw only 3.6kW because its charger sets the ceiling. A standard 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 1 lead is exactly what you need.

For city driving, a 5m cable is the logical choice. The 3.6kW rate fills the 16kWh pack in around four to five hours from empty, which easily fits an overnight charge or a longer lunchtime top-up. Type 2 to Type 1 cables are less widely stocked than Type 2 to Type 2, so carrying a dedicated lead is particularly useful when visiting AC charge points that do not offer tethered Type 1 connectors.

What does it cost to charge?

Filling the 16kWh battery from empty costs roughly £1.20 at an off-peak tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, or around £4.30 at a standard rate of around 27p per kWh. As a small, older EV, home charging costs are very low, and the i-MiEV suits owners who top up regularly rather than waiting for empty. Check current tariff rates before budgeting.

Good

Contact us
Can the Mitsubishi i-MiEV charge at 22kW?+

No, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 3.6kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What charging cable does the Mitsubishi i-MiEV need?+

A Type 2 to Type 1 cable. The i-MiEV has a Type 1 (J1772) AC inlet, common on Japanese EVs of its era. The public charge point or wallbox end uses Type 2; the car end is the round J1772 plug. A cable rated at 7.4kW is sufficient, as the car's onboard charger is limited to 3.6kW.

Can the Mitsubishi i-MiEV rapid charge?+

Yes, via CHAdeMO DC rapid charging, which uses the charger's own tethered cable rather than one you buy. The i-MiEV supports up to around 50kW CHAdeMO, though the actual rate depends on the charger and battery condition. For AC charging at home or public wallboxes, you supply your own Type 2 to Type 1 cable.

How long does the Mitsubishi i-MiEV take to charge at home?+

At 3.6kW on a home wallbox, the 16kWh battery takes around four to five hours from empty. On a standard 3-pin socket (around 2.3kW) it takes around seven hours. Because the pack is small, topping it up from a partial charge takes much less time, and plugging in every evening keeps it well above empty.

What length cable do I need for the Mitsubishi i-MiEV?+

A 5m cable is fine for most home charging situations. If your wallbox is set back from where the car parks, or the car's port ends up further from the socket than expected, a 7m lead provides extra comfort. Because the i-MiEV is compact, most standard 5m cables reach without difficulty.
