Charge speeds

Across the Mitsubishi range.

These Mitsubishi models use a Type 1 inlet, so you need a Type 1 to Type 2 cable. AC charging tops out at 3.6kW across the range. A cable never charges faster than your car's on-board charger or your home supply allows, so on a standard single-phase UK home a 7.4 kW cable gives the full speed available.

Speeds are on-board AC limits. Rapid DC uses the station's own cable.

Charging guide

Charging
your Mitsubishi.

Mitsubishi's plug-in and electric range in the UK covers three models: the Outlander PHEV, Eclipse Cross PHEV and the older i-MiEV city car. Unlike most modern EVs, every Mitsubishi uses a Type 1 inlet rather than the Type 2 standard that dominates newer vehicles. To charge from a home wallbox or a public Type 2 AC charge point, you need a Type 2 to Type 1 cable.

All three Mitsubishi models are relatively modest AC chargers, with a maximum onboard charger of 3.6kW. The small batteries on the Outlander PHEV and Eclipse Cross PHEV top up quickly from any level of AC supply, and the i-MiEV's 16kWh pack will charge fully overnight even on a 3-pin granny charger. Pick your model below for its exact times and recommended cable, or read the brand-wide guidance underneath.

What charging cable does a Mitsubishi need?

Every Mitsubishi in the UK range, including the Outlander PHEV, Eclipse Cross PHEV and i-MiEV, uses a Type 1 inlet. Home wallboxes and public AC charge points in the UK all have Type 2 sockets, so the lead you need is a Type 2 to Type 1 cable. Do not attempt to use a Type 2 to Type 2 cable, as it will not fit the car's inlet.

All three Mitsubishi models charge at 3.6kW on AC. That is well below the 7.4kW cap of a standard UK single-phase supply, so a 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 1 cable is more than enough for any of them. There is no benefit in buying a larger cable.

Because the AC charging rate is low and the batteries are small (13.8kWh on the Outlander PHEV and Eclipse Cross PHEV, 16kWh on the i-MiEV), all three models are also well suited to overnight charging from a 3-pin granny charger if you prefer to keep the Type 2 to Type 1 lead for public charge points. A single 5m 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 1 cable suits every Mitsubishi in the UK range.

What type of charging cable does a Mitsubishi use?+

All Mitsubishi models sold in the UK, including the Outlander PHEV, Eclipse Cross PHEV and i-MiEV, use a Type 1 inlet. UK wallboxes and public AC charge points all use Type 2 sockets, so you need a Type 2 to Type 1 cable. A Type 2 to Type 2 cable will not connect.

What charging cable does a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV or Eclipse Cross PHEV need?+

A Type 2 to Type 1 cable. Both models charge at 3.6kW on AC and have a 13.8kWh battery, so a standard 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 1 cable is more than enough. Their small batteries also charge comfortably overnight from a 3-pin granny charger.

Can a Mitsubishi charge at 7.4kW on AC?+

No. All three Mitsubishi models top out at 3.6kW on AC, well below the 7.4kW limit of a single-phase supply. A 7.4kW cable is already the right choice since it is rated above what the car can draw, but the car will only ever charge at 3.6kW regardless of the cable rating.

Does the Mitsubishi i-MiEV use the same cable as the Outlander PHEV?+

Yes. The i-MiEV also uses a Type 1 inlet and charges at 3.6kW on AC, so it needs the same Type 2 to Type 1 cable as the Outlander PHEV and Eclipse Cross PHEV. Its 16kWh battery will charge fully overnight even on a standard household socket.

What length cable do I need for my Mitsubishi?+

5m suits most home wallboxes and public charge points. Choose 7m or 10m if you park on the street or your socket is set some distance from the charging port. Since Mitsubishi PHEVs charge slowly, the cable length makes little practical difference to charge time, but the right length avoids strain on the connectors.
