Why this fits your iOn+

The Peugeot iOn has a Type 1 inlet and a single-phase 3.7kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Peugeot iOn.

The Peugeot iOn is a compact three-door city electric hatchback sold in the UK from 2010 to 2015. It was a rebadged Mitsubishi i-MiEV, sharing its platform with the Citroen C-Zero. With a 16kWh battery, the iOn was always a short-range urban car, and it uses a Type 1 (SAE J1772) AC inlet rather than the Type 2 standard found on later EVs. The cable you need for home wallboxes and public AC points is a Type 2 to Type 1 lead: Type 2 on the wallbox side, Type 1 on the car.

The onboard AC charger accepts up to 3.7kW on a single phase, which means charging is slow compared with modern EVs but manageable overnight given the small battery. For rapid DC top-ups the iOn uses a CHAdeMO connector, which takes a tethered cable at the rapid charger itself, not one you supply.

The iOn uses a Type 1 AC inlet. You need a Type 2 to Type 1 cable, not a standard Type 2 to Type 2 lead. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the iOn need?

Because the iOn has a Type 1 inlet, you cannot use a standard Type 2 to Type 2 cable. You need a Type 2 to Type 1 lead, which is the right cable for older EVs and PHEVs with the J1772 connector. The car's onboard charger is rated at 3.7kW, so even on a 7kW wallbox, the iOn will draw only 3.7kW: the charger limits the rate, not the cable.

There is no benefit in buying a higher-rated Type 2 to Type 1 cable for the iOn because the car will not draw more than 3.7kW in any case. A 3.7kW or single-phase cable in a 5m length covers everything the car can do at home or at public AC points that offer untethered sockets.

What does it cost to charge?

The 16kWh battery is small enough that a full charge from empty costs roughly £1 to £1.50 on an off-peak tariff at around 7.5p per kWh, and around £4 to £5 at a standard rate of around 27p per kWh. Running costs per mile are very low even at standard rates, which is part of why the iOn remains popular as a city commuter. Check current tariffs, as rates vary.

Good

Contact us
Can the Peugeot iOn charge at 22kW?+

No, the Peugeot iOn has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 3.7kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What charging cable does the Peugeot iOn need?+

A Type 2 to Type 1 cable. The iOn uses a Type 1 (J1772) AC inlet, not the Type 2 found on most modern EVs, so a standard Type 2 to Type 2 lead will not fit. The wallbox or public charger end is Type 2; the car end is Type 1. For CHAdeMO rapid DC charging, the charger supplies its own tethered cable.

Can the Peugeot iOn charge at 7kW?+

No. The iOn's onboard charger is limited to 3.7kW, so even plugged into a 7kW wallbox it will draw only 3.7kW. The charger in the car sets the maximum speed, and no cable or wallbox can change that.

How long does the Peugeot iOn take to charge at home?+

On a 3.7kW home wallbox or wallbox rated higher (the iOn draws only 3.7kW), the 16kWh battery takes roughly 4 to 5 hours from empty. On a standard 3-pin socket at 2.3kW, expect around 7 to 8 hours. Given the modest battery size, an overnight charge is rarely needed.

What cable length do I need for the Peugeot iOn?+

A 5m Type 2 to Type 1 cable covers most home charging situations comfortably. The iOn is a compact city car so the cable run from wallbox to inlet is rarely awkward. If your wallbox is set back from the usual parking spot, a 7m lead gives a useful margin.
