Porsche 918 Spyder
Charging cable
Full AC charging speed for your car.
Why this fits your 918 Spyder+−
The Porsche 918 Spyder has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 3.6kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.

Charging
the Porsche 918 Spyder.
The Porsche 918 Spyder is a limited-edition hybrid hypercar produced from 2013 to 2015, of which Porsche built just 918 examples worldwide. It combines a naturally aspirated V8 petrol engine with two electric motors and a 6.8kWh battery. While its performance credentials are extraordinary, its plug-in charging capability is modest by comparison: the onboard AC charger accepts just 3.6kW on a single phase, making it one of the slowest-charging PHEVs in any context. Charging for AC top-ups uses a Type 2 inlet, so the cable is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead.
There is no standard DC rapid charging on the 918 Spyder: the notes refer to an optional Porsche Speed Charging Station that provided a proprietary faster DC top-up, but that is not a standard public CCS rapid charge. For all practical purposes, the 918 Spyder charges slowly on AC, taking a couple of hours to fill its small battery.
The 918 Spyder's onboard charger is limited to 3.6kW. Even a 7kW wallbox will deliver only 3.6kW to the car. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.
7.4 kW or 22 kW?
Which cable does
the 918 Spyder need?
The 918 Spyder's onboard charger draws only 3.6kW regardless of what wallbox or cable is connected. A Type 2 to Type 2 cable rated at 7.4kW or even 22kW will deliver exactly the same 3.6kW to the car. There is no benefit in specifying a higher-rated cable for this vehicle.
A 5m Type 2 to Type 2 cable covers the practical charging needs of the 918 Spyder at a home wallbox or a public AC point. Given the small battery, the car fills in around two hours at 3.6kW, so charging is rarely a lengthy process. A standard cable in any reasonable single-phase rating will do the job.
What does it cost to charge?
The 6.8kWh battery is tiny, so a full charge from empty costs roughly 50p on an off-peak tariff at around 7.5p per kWh, or around £2 at a standard rate of around 27p per kWh. The charging cost is essentially negligible given the car's context. Check current tariffs, as rates vary.

Porsche 918 Spyder FAQs
Good
questions.
Still not sure? Our team will confirm the right cable for your vehicle.
Contact usCan the Porsche 918 Spyder charge at 22kW?+−
No, the Porsche 918 Spyder has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 3.6kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.
What length charging cable should I get?+−
5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.
What charging cable does the Porsche 918 Spyder need?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The 918 Spyder has a Type 2 AC inlet and an onboard charger rated at 3.6kW single-phase. Any Type 2 to Type 2 cable in a standard 7.4kW rating covers the car's charging needs. There is no standard DC rapid charging on the 918 Spyder, so no separate DC cable is required.
Can the Porsche 918 Spyder charge at 7kW or faster?+−
No. The onboard charger is limited to 3.6kW, so even a 7kW or 22kW wallbox will deliver only 3.6kW to the car. The charger in the vehicle sets the maximum speed, and no cable or wallbox upgrade changes that. Charging the small 6.8kWh battery at 3.6kW takes around two hours from empty.
Is the Porsche 918 Spyder fully electric?+−
No. The 918 Spyder is a plug-in hybrid. Its 6.8kWh battery powers the electric motors for a limited electric-only range, while a large naturally aspirated V8 engine does the heavy lifting in performance driving. The plug-in element tops up the battery for electric assist and short low-speed electric running.
How long does the Porsche 918 Spyder take to charge?+−
At 3.6kW, the 6.8kWh battery takes around two hours from empty to full. In practice many owners will top up from a partial state rather than from empty, making charge times shorter still. A standard home wallbox or even a 3-pin socket suffices given how small the battery is.
