Charge speeds

Across the Porsche range.

Every Porsche here uses a Type 2 inlet, so one Type 2 to Type 2 cable fits the range. On-board AC charging ranges from about 3.6kW to 11kW depending on the model. A cable never charges faster than your car's on-board charger or your home supply allows, so on a standard single-phase UK home a 7.4 kW cable gives the full speed available.

Speeds are on-board AC limits. Rapid DC uses the station's own cable.

Charging guide

Charging
your Porsche.

Porsche's electrified range covers the all-electric Taycan, Macan Electric and Cayenne Electric, alongside the E-Hybrid versions of the Cayenne and Panamera. Every one of them charges through a Type 2 inlet, so they all take the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging.

What differs is AC speed: the electric models charge faster on AC than the plug-in hybrids, which is what decides whether a larger cable is worth it. Pick your model below for its exact charging times and recommended cable, or read the brand-wide guidance underneath.

What charging cable does a Porsche need?

Every Porsche plugs in with a Type 2 inlet, so the lead you need is a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. A 5m length suits most driveways, with 7m or 10m worth it for on-street parking or a wallbox far from the car. No Porsche needs a Type 1 cable.

The electric Taycan, Macan Electric and Cayenne Electric have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger. Almost all UK homes are single-phase, which caps home charging at 7.4kW whatever cable you use, so a 7.4kW cable gives most owners the full speed their driveway can provide. A 22kW rated cable only helps on a three-phase supply or at 22kW public AC points, where these cars pull their full 11kW.

The Cayenne and Panamera E-Hybrid models charge more slowly on AC, between about 3.6kW and 7.4kW on a single phase, so a 7.4kW cable is already more than they can draw. In short, a single 5m 7.4kW Type 2 cable suits the entire Porsche range, with a three-phase cable only worth it for an electric model on a three-phase supply.

Do all Porsches use a Type 2 charging cable?+

Yes. The electric Taycan, Macan Electric and Cayenne Electric, along with the Cayenne and Panamera E-Hybrids, all use a Type 2 inlet. They take the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging, and no Porsche needs a Type 1 cable.

What charging cable does a Porsche Taycan need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, 5m for most driveways. The Taycan has an 11kW three-phase onboard charger, but on a single-phase home it charges at 7.4kW, so a 7.4kW cable gives the full speed available. Its rapid charging is DC and uses the charger's own cable.

Can a Porsche charge at 22kW?+

Not on AC. The electric models top out at 11kW on three phases, so a 22kW cable only ever delivers up to 11kW, and only on a three-phase supply. On a standard single-phase home every Porsche charges at 7.4kW or less on AC.

What cable does a Cayenne E-Hybrid need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The Cayenne E-Hybrid charges at up to around 7.4kW on AC, so a 7.4kW cable is all it can use. The older S E-Hybrid versions are slower still at around 3.6kW, so there is no need for a larger cable.

What length cable do I need for my Porsche?+

5m suits most home wallboxes and public charge points. Step up to 7m or 10m if you park on the street, share a charger, or your wallbox sits far from the car's charging port. Buy the shortest length that reaches comfortably.
