Why this fits your Kangoo ZE+

The Renault Kangoo ZE has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 7.4kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Renault Kangoo ZE.

The Renault Kangoo ZE (ZE33 generation) is a compact electric van that was sold in the UK between 2017 and 2021. It carries a 33kWh battery pack and plugs in via a Type 2 inlet, so the cable you bring to a home wallbox or public AC point is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead. This generation has no CCS or CHAdeMO port, so rapid DC charging is not available: all charging is done through the onboard AC charger.

The Kangoo ZE's onboard charger is rated at 7.4kW on a single phase. That means AC charging speed is already at its ceiling with a standard 7.4kW cable, and no cable, however high its rating, can push more power through the car's charger than it is built to accept.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the Kangoo ZE need?

Because the Kangoo ZE's onboard charger tops out at 7.4kW on a single phase, a 7.4kW Type 2 cable is all you need. It delivers every kilowatt the van's charger can accept, so a higher-rated cable would add cost without adding speed. A 5m lead suits most driveways and depot bays comfortably.

There is no case for a 22kW three-phase cable on this van. The onboard charger cannot use the extra capacity, and the van has no DC rapid port at all, so rapid charging off a tethered DC unit is also ruled out. Keep it simple: a good quality 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable is everything this generation Kangoo ZE requires.

What does it cost to charge?

Filling the 33kWh battery from empty at a typical off-peak EV tariff of around 7.5p per kWh costs roughly £2.50. At a standard rate of around 27p per kWh the same full charge comes to around £9. Overnight home charging on a dedicated EV tariff is the most cost-effective routine for a van used on daily local rounds. Check current tariffs, as rates vary.

Contact us
What charging cable does the Renault Kangoo ZE need?+

The Renault Kangoo ZE has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on single-phase AC at up to 7.4kW.

Can the Renault Kangoo ZE charge at 22kW?+

No, the Renault Kangoo ZE has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 7.4kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What charging cable does the Renault Kangoo ZE (2017) need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable rated at 7.4kW. The Kangoo ZE (ZE33) has a Type 2 inlet and a 7.4kW single-phase onboard charger, so that cable delivers the maximum AC speed the van can draw. A 22kW cable is not needed and will not charge any faster.

Can the Renault Kangoo ZE (2017) use rapid DC charging?+

No. The ZE33 generation has no DC rapid charging port. All charging is AC-only through the Type 2 inlet. If you need rapid charging capability in a Kangoo-sized van, you would need to look at a later model that includes a CCS port.

How long does the Renault Kangoo ZE (2017) take to charge at home?+

On a 7.4kW home wallbox, the 33kWh battery takes around 4.5 to 5 hours from empty, comfortably covering an overnight charge. A standard three-pin socket is much slower at around 15 hours and is best reserved for emergencies rather than routine daily charging.

What length cable do I need for the Renault Kangoo ZE?+

A 5m Type 2 cable suits most driveways and depot charging bays. If your wallbox is set back from where you typically park the van, or the port ends up on the far side, a 7m or 10m lead gives you more flexibility without the hassle of stretching.
