Charge speeds

Across the Renault range.

Renault spans both eras: 2 models use Type 1 and the rest use Type 2, so check your car before you buy. On-board AC charging ranges from about 3.7kW to 22kW depending on the model. A cable never charges faster than your car's on-board charger or your home supply allows, so on a standard single-phase UK home a 7.4 kW cable gives the full speed available.

Speeds are on-board AC limits. Rapid DC uses the station's own cable.

Charging guide

Charging
your Renault.

Renault has one of the broadest electric ranges on sale in the UK, spanning compact city cars, family crossovers, and electric vans: the Renault 5 E-Tech, 4 E-Tech, Megane E-Tech, Scenic E-Tech, Zoe, Kangoo E-Tech, Master E-Tech, Trafic E-Tech, Twingo E-Tech, and Twingo Z.E., plus plug-in hybrid versions of the Captur, Megane, and Rafale. Almost all current Renaults use a Type 2 inlet. However, several older models use a Type 1 inlet: the original Kangoo Z.E. (2011 and early variants), the Fluence ZE, and early Kangoo ZE vans from around 2011 to 2016. These need a Type 2 to Type 1 cable rather than the standard Type 2 to Type 2.

What also changes across the range is AC charging speed. Several newer Renaults, including the Megane E-Tech, Scenic E-Tech, newer Master E-Tech, Zoe (gen 2), Zoe Van, and Twingo Z.E., have 22kW three-phase onboard chargers, making them among the fastest AC-charging cars available. The newer 5 E-Tech, 4 E-Tech, Kangoo E-Tech, and Trafic E-Tech have 11kW three-phase chargers. Pick your model below for its exact recommended cable and charge times, or read the brand-wide guidance underneath.

What charging cable does a Renault need?

Most Renaults use a Type 2 inlet and take a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The exception is certain older models: the original Kangoo Z.E. (built roughly 2011 to 2016) and the Fluence ZE both have a Type 1 inlet and need a Type 2 to Type 1 cable instead. The updated Kangoo Z.E. 33 and later Kangoo ZE moved to Type 2, as do all current E-Tech models. If you are unsure which generation your Kangoo is, check the car's charging port: Type 1 has a five-pin round connector, while Type 2 has a seven-pin flattened oval.

For current Type 2 Renaults, the onboard charger rating is the key to cable choice. The Megane E-Tech, Scenic E-Tech, Zoe (gen 2), Zoe Van, Twingo Z.E., and newer Master E-Tech all have 22kW three-phase onboard chargers, the highest AC rate available in most production EVs. On a standard UK single-phase home wallbox all of them are capped at 7.4kW, so a 7.4kW cable delivers the full home speed. A 22kW rated cable only earns its cost if you have a three-phase supply at home or regularly use 22kW public AC charge points, where these models can draw their full 22kW. The 5 E-Tech, 4 E-Tech, Kangoo E-Tech, and Trafic E-Tech have 11kW three-phase chargers, which similarly cap at 7.4kW on a single-phase home.

The PHEVs, including the Captur E-Tech PHEV, Megane E-Tech PHEV, and Rafale E-Tech PHEV, are single-phase and charge at 3.7kW to 7.4kW, so a 7.4kW cable is already more than any of them can draw. For most owners a 5m 7.4kW Type 2 cable covers the current Renault range; owners of the older Type 1 models need a Type 2 to Type 1 cable instead.

Do all Renaults use a Type 2 charging cable?+

Most do, but not all. The original Kangoo Z.E. (2011 to roughly 2016) and the Fluence ZE use a Type 1 inlet and need a Type 2 to Type 1 cable. All current E-Tech models and the Zoe gen 2 use a Type 2 inlet and take a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. Check your charging port if you are unsure which generation you have.

What cable does a Renault Zoe, Megane E-Tech, or Scenic E-Tech need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. These models have 22kW three-phase onboard chargers, but on a standard single-phase UK home supply they charge at 7.4kW, so a 7.4kW cable covers home charging. A 22kW cable is worthwhile only if you have a three-phase supply or regularly use 22kW public AC points, where these cars will draw their full 22kW.

Can a Renault charge at 22kW AC?+

Several Renaults can: the Zoe (gen 2), Megane E-Tech BEV, Scenic E-Tech, Twingo Z.E., and newer Master E-Tech all have 22kW three-phase onboard chargers. This only works on a three-phase supply or a 22kW public AC charge point. On a standard single-phase home wallbox they are capped at 7.4kW regardless of cable.

What cable does an older Renault Kangoo Z.E. or Fluence ZE need?+

A Type 2 to Type 1 cable. The original Kangoo Z.E. from 2011 to roughly 2016 and the Fluence ZE have a Type 1 inlet on the car side, which is different from the Type 2 inlet used on later models. A Type 2 to Type 1 cable connects a standard Type 2 wallbox or charge point to the car's Type 1 socket.

What length cable do I need for my Renault?+

5m suits most home wallboxes and public charge points. For the Kangoo and Master vans, consider where the charging inlet is positioned on the vehicle and whether a 7m cable would reach more comfortably from a wallbox to that point. For on-street parking or a distant wallbox, 7m or 10m is worth choosing.
