Why this fits your Twingo Z.E.+

The Renault Twingo Z.E. has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 22kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 22kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Renault Twingo Z.E..

The Renault Twingo Z.E. is the third-generation Twingo city car, sold in the UK between 2020 and 2023 as a pure electric model. It carries a 22kWh battery (with around 21.4kWh usable) and plugs in via a Type 2 inlet. There is no CCS or CHAdeMO port, so all charging is done through AC only. The cable you bring to a home wallbox or public AC point is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead.

What makes the Twingo Z.E. unusual is its onboard AC charger, which is rated at 22kW on three phases. This is exceptionally high for a small city car and is a legacy of Renault's Chameleon charger technology. The headline figure is real, but it requires a three-phase supply and the right cable to be useful.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the Twingo Z.E. need?

The Twingo Z.E. has no DC rapid charging port, so AC charging is the only option. The onboard charger supports up to 22kW on three phases, which is genuinely higher than the 7.4kW ceiling of a standard UK single-phase home supply. On a domestic wallbox, charging tops out at 7.4kW regardless of the cable you use, and with a 22kWh battery the car is fully charged in under three hours even at that rate.

A 22kW three-phase cable earns its cost on this car only if you have access to a three-phase supply or regularly use 22kW public AC charge posts, where the Twingo can draw its full 22kW and complete a charge in just over an hour. For typical home use on a single-phase wallbox, a 7.4kW cable is perfectly adequate. Given the small battery, charge times are short either way.

What does it cost to charge?

Filling the 22kWh battery from empty at an off-peak EV tariff of around 7.5p per kWh costs roughly £1.65. At a standard rate of around 27p per kWh the same charge comes to around £6. For a city car with a small battery, overnight charging costs are modest however you calculate them. Check current tariffs as rates vary.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What charging cable does the Renault Twingo Z.E. need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. For home charging on a single-phase wallbox a 7.4kW cable is fine: the 22kWh battery fills in under three hours. If you regularly use 22kW public AC charge posts, a 22kW three-phase cable lets the Twingo draw its full 22kW onboard charger capacity.

Can the Renault Twingo Z.E. charge at 22kW?+

Yes, it can, but only on a three-phase supply with a 22kW cable. Almost all UK home wallboxes are single-phase, capped at 7.4kW. On a 22kW public AC charge point the Twingo can pull its full 22kW, which is unusual for a car this size and makes for a very quick top-up.

Can the Renault Twingo Z.E. use rapid DC charging?+

No. The Twingo Z.E. has no CCS or CHAdeMO port. All charging is AC-only via the Type 2 inlet. This means you cannot use rapid DC chargers at motorway services, though the car is designed primarily for urban use where rapid charging is less critical.

How long does the Renault Twingo Z.E. take to charge at home?+

On a 7.4kW single-phase home wallbox, the 22kWh battery takes around 3 hours from empty. On a 22kW three-phase AC post with the right cable, this drops to around one to 1.5 hours. A standard three-pin socket would take roughly 8 to 9 hours.
