Charging guide

Charging
your Subaru.

Subaru currently offers one electric model in the UK: the Solterra, a battery electric SUV developed in partnership with Toyota. The Solterra uses a Type 2 inlet, so it takes a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging.

The Solterra has an 11kW three-phase onboard charger, which means the home supply type matters when choosing your cable. On a standard single-phase home supply the charge rate is capped at 7.4kW, while a three-phase supply or 22kW public AC point unlocks the full 11kW. Pick your model below for its charge times, or read the guidance underneath.

What charging cable does a Subaru need?

The Subaru Solterra uses a Type 2 inlet, so the cable you need is a Type 2 to Type 2. A 5m length suits most home driveways and wallboxes; step up to 7m or 10m for on-street parking or a wallbox set back from where you park. The Solterra does not need a Type 1 cable.

The Solterra's 11kW three-phase onboard charger means it can charge at 11kW on a three-phase supply or a 22kW public AC point. Almost all UK homes are single-phase, which caps home charging at 7.4kW regardless of the cable. A 7.4kW cable delivers the full speed your home can provide. A 22kW cable only pays off if you have a three-phase supply at home or regularly use 22kW public AC points.

In practice, a single 5m 7.4kW Type 2 cable is the right choice for most Solterra owners charging at home. On a 7.4kW wallbox, the Solterra's 71.4kWh battery takes roughly 10 hours from empty, so overnight charging is straightforward.

What charging cable does a Subaru Solterra need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The Solterra uses a Type 2 inlet and has an 11kW three-phase onboard charger. On a standard single-phase UK home supply it charges at 7.4kW, so a 7.4kW cable covers home charging fully. A 22kW cable only helps at a three-phase supply or 22kW public AC point.

Does the Subaru Solterra use a Type 1 or Type 2 cable?+

Type 2. The Solterra uses a Type 2 inlet for AC charging, so it takes a Type 2 to Type 2 cable at home and public charge points. A Type 1 cable is not compatible with the Solterra.

Can a Subaru Solterra charge at 22kW?+

No. The Solterra's onboard charger is rated at 11kW on three phases. A 22kW cable cannot push more than 11kW into the car, and on a standard single-phase UK home supply the charge rate is capped at 7.4kW regardless of the cable.

How long does it take to charge a Subaru Solterra?+

On a 7.4kW single-phase wallbox, the Solterra's 71.4kWh battery takes roughly 10 hours from empty to full, making overnight home charging the practical approach. On a three-phase 11kW supply, that drops to around 7 hours. The Solterra also supports DC rapid charging at up to 150kW.

What length cable do I need for a Subaru Solterra?+

5m suits most home wallboxes and public charge points. Choose 7m or 10m if you park on-street, share a charge point, or your wallbox is positioned away from the car's charging port. Buy the shortest length that comfortably reaches, as longer cables cost more and are heavier to handle.
