Toyota Prius Plug-in
Charging cable
Full AC charging speed for your car.
Why this fits your Prius Plug-in+−
The Toyota Prius Plug-in has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 3.7kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.

How long does it take?
Charging
the Toyota Prius Plug-in.
The Toyota Prius Plug-in (third generation) arrived in UK showrooms in 2023, bringing an updated design and a 13.6kWh battery that gives a meaningful electric-only range before the 2.0-litre petrol engine takes over. It is a PHEV with a Type 2 inlet, so the cable you connect at home or at a public AC post is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead.
The 2023 Prius Plug-in uses a single-phase 3.7kW onboard AC charger and has no DC rapid charging capability. The modest charging rate means cable choice is simple: a 7.4kW Type 2 cable is all you need, and the battery is small enough to charge fully in under four hours even at this rate.
Estimates based on battery size and charge power. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.
7.4 kW or 22 kW?
Which cable does
the Prius Plug-in need?
With a 3.7kW onboard charger the Prius Plug-in is one of the slower charging PHEVs available, and a 7.4kW Type 2 cable is already rated well above what the car can draw. Whether you plug into a 7.4kW home wallbox or a faster public AC post, the car simply takes 3.7kW and no more. A 22kW cable offers absolutely no advantage on this vehicle.
The silver lining of the slow charge rate is that even a standard 3-pin domestic socket at around 2.3kW will fill the 13.6kWh battery overnight without difficulty. A 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable at 5m covers all home and public AC charging needs. A longer 7m lead is worth considering if your wallbox is set further back from where the car parks.
What does it cost to charge?
Charging the 13.6kWh battery from empty costs around £1 at an off-peak EV tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, or around £3.70 at a standard rate of around 27p. Charging at home regularly is the cheapest way to use the Prius Plug-in's electric range. Tariffs vary, so check your current rate.

Toyota Prius Plug-in FAQs
Good
questions.
Still not sure? Our team will confirm the right cable for your vehicle.
Contact usWhat charging cable does the Toyota Prius Plug-in need?+−
The Toyota Prius Plug-in has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on single-phase AC at up to 3.7kW.
Can the Toyota Prius Plug-in charge at 22kW?+−
No, the Toyota Prius Plug-in has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 3.7kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.
What length charging cable should I get?+−
5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.
What cable does the Toyota Prius Plug-in 2023 need?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging. The 2023 Prius Plug-in has a 3.7kW single-phase onboard charger. A standard 7.4kW cable is more than sufficient and works with any home wallbox or public Type 2 AC post. There is no benefit to a 22kW cable.
Does the 2023 Toyota Prius Plug-in support rapid DC charging?+−
No. The third-generation Prius Plug-in charges on AC only via its Type 2 inlet at up to 3.7kW. There is no DC rapid charging port. For longer journeys the 2.0-litre petrol engine continues once the battery charge is used.
How long does the Toyota Prius Plug-in 2023 take to charge?+−
On a 7.4kW wallbox the car charges at its 3.7kW maximum, filling the 13.6kWh battery from empty in around three and a half to four hours. On a standard 3-pin domestic socket at roughly 2.3kW it takes around six to seven hours. A full overnight charge is easily achievable on either.
Can I use a 22kW cable on the Toyota Prius Plug-in 2023?+−
You can connect one, but there is no benefit. The Prius Plug-in's onboard charger is limited to 3.7kW single-phase and cannot draw more than that regardless of the cable rating or supply voltage. A 7.4kW cable is the sensible and cost-effective choice.
