Charge speeds

Across the Toyota range.

Every Toyota here uses a Type 2 inlet, so one Type 2 to Type 2 cable fits the range. On-board AC charging ranges from about 3.7kW to 11kW depending on the model. A cable never charges faster than your car's on-board charger or your home supply allows, so on a standard single-phase UK home a 7.4 kW cable gives the full speed available.

Speeds are on-board AC limits. Rapid DC uses the station's own cable.

Charging guide

Charging
your Toyota.

Toyota's plug-in range includes the bZ4X, Urban Cruiser, C-HR+, Proace Electric, Proace City Electric, C-HR PHEV, and RAV4 PHEV, along with the Prius Plug-in across two generations. Almost all of these use a Type 2 inlet. The exception is the older first-generation Prius Plug-in, which has a Type 1 inlet and requires a Type 2 to Type 1 cable. The newer second-generation Prius Plug-in switched to Type 2, so check which version you have.

The charging speed available to each Toyota varies from around 3.3kW on the first-generation Prius Plug-in up to 11kW on the newer BEVs like the bZ4X, Urban Cruiser, and C-HR+. That difference is what determines whether a 7.4kW cable is enough or whether a three-phase option makes sense. Pick your model below for the exact recommendation, or read the guidance underneath.

What charging cable does a Toyota need?

Most Toyota models use a Type 2 inlet, so the cable you need is a Type 2 to Type 2. The one exception is the older first-generation Prius Plug-in, which needs a Type 2 to Type 1 cable instead. A 5m length suits most home driveways; step up to 7m or 10m for on-street parking or a wallbox set back from where you park.

The bZ4X, Urban Cruiser, and C-HR+ all have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger. The majority of UK homes are single-phase, which limits home charging to 7.4kW regardless of the cable. A 7.4kW cable is already the full speed most home supplies can deliver. A 22kW cable only adds value if you have a three-phase supply at home or use 22kW public AC points regularly, where those models will pull their full 11kW.

The plug-in hybrids in Toyota's range charge more slowly on AC. The RAV4 PHEV and C-HR PHEV charge at around 6.6kW, the newer Prius Plug-in at 3.7kW, and the older first-gen Prius Plug-in at just 3.3kW. For all of these a standard 7.4kW cable is more than adequate. A single 5m 7.4kW Type 2 cable suits every current Toyota model except the older first-generation Prius Plug-in, which needs a Type 1 cable.

Do all Toyotas use a Type 2 charging cable?+

Almost all do. The older first-generation Prius Plug-in has a Type 1 inlet and needs a Type 2 to Type 1 cable. Every other Toyota plug-in, including the bZ4X, Urban Cruiser, RAV4 PHEV, and the newer Prius Plug-in, uses a Type 2 inlet. Always confirm which Prius generation you have before buying.

What charging cable does a Toyota bZ4X need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, 5m for most home setups. The bZ4X has an 11kW three-phase onboard charger, but on a standard single-phase home supply it charges at 7.4kW. A 7.4kW cable gives the full home speed; a 22kW cable only helps on a three-phase supply or 22kW public AC point.

What cable does the older Toyota Prius Plug-in need?+

The first-generation Prius Plug-in has a Type 1 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 1 cable. It charges at just 3.3kW on AC, so a standard 7.4kW rated Type 2 to Type 1 cable is more than sufficient. The newer second-generation Prius Plug-in switched to Type 2, so the cable depends on which version you own.

Can a Toyota bZ4X or Urban Cruiser charge at 22kW?+

No. Both the bZ4X and Urban Cruiser top out at 11kW on a three-phase supply. No Toyota model charges at 22kW on AC. On a standard single-phase home wallbox both charge at 7.4kW, so a 7.4kW cable is all you need for home use.

What length cable do I need for my Toyota?+

5m covers the majority of home wallboxes and public charge points. Choose 7m or 10m if you park on the street, need to reach around the car, or your wallbox is positioned some distance from where you park. Longer cables cost more and are heavier to coil, so buy the shortest that reaches comfortably.
