Why this fits your e-Golf+

The Volkswagen e-Golf has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 7.2kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Volkswagen e-Golf.

The Volkswagen e-Golf is a fully electric version of the seventh-generation Golf hatchback, sold in the UK from 2014 to 2020. It came in two battery configurations: early cars carried a smaller pack of around 24kWh, while the 2017 facelift brought an upgrade to around 35.8kWh usable. Both versions charge through a Type 2 inlet for AC charging, so the cable you bring is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead.

Alongside AC charging, the e-Golf supports DC rapid charging at up to around 40kW via a CCS port, which uses the charger's own tethered cable. The onboard AC charger is rated at 7.2kW single-phase, and that figure applies to both battery variants. As a now-discontinued model, many e-Golfs in the used market will have worn battery capacity to some degree, so real-world charge times may vary.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the e-Golf need?

The e-Golf's onboard charger is rated at 7.2kW single-phase. This is just under the 7.4kW that most wallboxes output, but in practice the difference is negligible: a 7.4kW single-phase Type 2 cable is the correct choice, covering home wallboxes and public AC points without compromise. There is no point buying a more powerful cable, since the car cannot draw beyond its 7.2kW ceiling.

A 22kW or three-phase cable would add unnecessary cost for the e-Golf. The single-phase onboard charger cannot make use of three-phase power, so a 22kW cable would deliver exactly the same 7.2kW as a cheaper 7.4kW cable. Stick with a 7.4kW single-phase Type 2 to Type 2 lead in a 5m or 7m length and the e-Golf will charge at its full rate every time you plug in.

What does it cost to charge?

Filling the larger 35.8kWh battery from empty costs roughly £2.70 on an off-peak tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, or around £9.70 at a standard rate of around 27p per kWh. The earlier 24kWh pack costs proportionally less, around £1.80 off-peak or £6.50 on a standard rate. Public rapid charging is typically far more expensive per kWh and is best reserved for longer journeys. Check current tariffs before calculating running costs.

Good

Contact us
What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What charging cable does the Volkswagen e-Golf need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC points. The e-Golf's onboard AC charger accepts up to 7.2kW single-phase, so a 7.4kW single-phase cable is the right match. A 22kW cable offers no benefit, as the car cannot accept three-phase power.

Can the Volkswagen e-Golf charge at 22kW?+

No. The e-Golf uses a single-phase onboard charger rated at 7.2kW. It cannot accept three-phase power, so a 22kW cable delivers no speed advantage. DC rapid charging at up to around 40kW is available via the CCS port, using the charger's own tethered cable.

How long does the Volkswagen e-Golf take to charge at home?+

On a 7.4kW wallbox, the facelift 35.8kWh battery takes around five hours from empty. The earlier 24kWh pack charges in around three to three and a half hours. A standard 3-pin socket at around 2.3kW can take well over ten hours for the larger battery, so a wallbox is strongly recommended.

Which battery does my Volkswagen e-Golf have?+

Early e-Golfs (2014 to 2016) carried a battery of around 24kWh, while the 2017 facelift upgraded this to around 35.8kWh usable. Both versions charge through the same Type 2 inlet at up to 7.2kW AC and support CCS DC charging at up to around 40kW. Very early cars may have CHAdeMO DC rather than CCS.
