Charge speeds

Across the Volkswagen range.

Every Volkswagen here uses a Type 2 inlet, so one Type 2 to Type 2 cable fits the range. On-board AC charging ranges from about 3.6kW to 11kW depending on the model. A cable never charges faster than your car's on-board charger or your home supply allows, so on a standard single-phase UK home a 7.4 kW cable gives the full speed available.

Speeds are on-board AC limits. Rapid DC uses the station's own cable.

Charging guide

Charging
your Volkswagen.

Volkswagen's electric range runs from the older e-up! and e-Golf through the full ID. family, the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7 and ID.Buzz, plus a wide line-up of GTE and eHybrid plug-in hybrids. The good news for charging is that every Volkswagen, old or new, uses a Type 2 inlet, so they all take the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging.

What changes between models is how fast each one charges on AC, which is what decides whether a 7.4kW cable or a larger one is worth buying. Pick your model below for its exact charging times and recommended cable, or read the brand-wide guidance underneath.

What charging cable does a Volkswagen need?

Every Volkswagen EV and plug-in hybrid charges through a Type 2 inlet, so the lead you need is a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. A 5m length suits most driveways, with 7m or 10m worth it for on-street parking or a wallbox far from the car. No Volkswagen needs a Type 1 cable.

The ID. models and the newer eHybrids have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger. Almost all UK homes are single-phase, which caps home charging at 7.4kW no matter what cable you use, so for most owners a 7.4kW cable delivers the full speed the driveway can provide. A 22kW rated cable only earns its cost if you have a three-phase supply or regularly use 22kW public AC points, where these cars will pull their full 11kW.

Older electric Volkswagens like the e-Golf and e-up!, and the GTE plug-in hybrids such as the Golf GTE and Passat GTE, charge more slowly on AC, between about 3.6kW and 7.2kW on a single phase. For these a 7.4kW cable is already more than the car can draw, so there is no reason to pay for a bigger one. In short, a single 5m 7.4kW Type 2 cable suits the entire Volkswagen range.

Do all Volkswagens use a Type 2 charging cable?+

Yes. Every Volkswagen EV and plug-in hybrid, from the e-up! and e-Golf to the ID. family and the GTE hybrids, uses a Type 2 inlet. That means they all take the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging, and no Volkswagen needs a Type 1 cable.

What charging cable does a VW ID.3 or ID.4 need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, 5m for most driveways. Both have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger, but on a standard single-phase home they charge at 7.4kW, so a 7.4kW cable gives the full speed available. Choose a 22kW cable only if you have a three-phase supply or use 22kW public AC points.

Can a Volkswagen charge at 22kW?+

No Volkswagen charges at 22kW on AC. The ID. models and newer eHybrids top out at 11kW on three phases, and the rest are lower, so a 22kW cable only ever delivers up to 11kW, and only then on a three-phase supply. On a normal single-phase home every VW charges at 7.4kW or less.

What charging cable does a Golf GTE need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The Golf GTE charges at around 3.6kW on AC, so a standard 7.4kW cable is more than enough, and its small battery also charges fully overnight from a 3-pin granny charger if you prefer to keep the lead for public points.

What length cable do I need for my Volkswagen?+

5m suits most home wallboxes and public charge points. Step up to 7m or 10m if you park on the street, share a charger, or your wallbox sits far from the car's charging port. Longer cables cost more and are heavier to coil, so buy the shortest length that reaches comfortably.
