Why this fits your e-up!+

The Volkswagen e-up! has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 7.2kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Volkswagen e-up!.

The Volkswagen e-up! is a fully electric city car sold in the UK from 2013 to 2023. It started life with a small battery of around 18.7kWh, and a significant update in 2020 brought a much larger 32.3kWh usable pack alongside a claimed range increase to around 160 miles WLTP. Both versions charge through a Type 2 inlet for AC charging, making a Type 2 to Type 2 cable the right lead to bring to home wallboxes and public AC points.

The e-up! also supports DC charging via CCS on updated models, or CHAdeMO on some earlier examples, at up to around 40kW, using the charger's own tethered cable. For AC charging, the onboard charger is rated at 7.2kW single-phase across all versions. Given its compact size and modest battery, the e-up! is well suited to short daily commutes charged on a home wallbox each night.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the e-up! need?

With a 7.2kW single-phase onboard charger, the e-up! draws just under the output of a typical 7.4kW home wallbox. A 7.4kW single-phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the sensible choice: it matches what any standard wallbox or public AC point can provide, and the car will draw its full 7.2kW rate without issue. There is no advantage to buying a higher-rated cable for this car.

A 22kW three-phase cable is unnecessary for the e-up!. The onboard charger is single-phase only and cannot draw more than 7.2kW regardless of the cable or charger rating. For a car with a 32.3kWh battery and a low daily range requirement, a 5m 7.4kW Type 2 cable and a home wallbox is a complete solution that covers everything an owner needs.

What does it cost to charge?

Filling the 2020-onward 32.3kWh usable battery from empty costs roughly £2.40 on an off-peak tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, or around £8.70 at a standard rate of around 27p per kWh. The original 18.7kWh pack is cheaper still: roughly £1.40 off-peak or around £5 on a standard rate. As a city car, the e-up! rarely goes from fully empty to fully charged in one go, so daily top-up costs are typically modest. Check current tariffs.

Good

Contact us
Can the Volkswagen e-up! charge at 22kW?+

No, the Volkswagen e-up! has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 7.2kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What charging cable does the Volkswagen e-up! need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for AC charging at home and public points. The e-up!'s onboard charger accepts up to 7.2kW single-phase, so a 7.4kW single-phase cable is the correct match. A 22kW or three-phase cable offers no speed benefit, as the car cannot accept three-phase AC power.

How long does the Volkswagen e-up! take to charge at home?+

On a 7.4kW wallbox, the 32.3kWh usable battery (2020 update) takes around four and a half hours from empty. The original 18.7kWh battery charges in closer to two and a half to three hours. A 3-pin socket at around 2.3kW adds many hours, so a dedicated wallbox is worthwhile even for a small city car.

Does the Volkswagen e-up! support DC rapid charging?+

Yes, on most versions. The 2020 update and many earlier cars have a CCS port for DC charging at up to around 40kW. Some early models use CHAdeMO instead of CCS. Rapid chargers supply their own tethered cable, so you do not need to buy a DC lead. The Type 2 cable you purchase is for AC charging only.

Does the Volkswagen e-up! need a Type 1 or Type 2 cable?+

Type 2. All UK-market e-up! models use a Type 2 AC inlet, so you need a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging. Type 1 is an older connector standard used on some Japanese imports and early American EVs, and does not apply to the e-up!.
