Why this fits your ID.Buzz+

The Volkswagen ID.Buzz has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 11kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 11kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.

Which Volkswagen ID.Buzz versions does it fit?+

This cable fits every Volkswagen ID.Buzz, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:

  • Volkswagen ID.Buzz GTX
  • Volkswagen ID.Buzz Life
  • Volkswagen ID.Buzz Style
  • Volkswagen ID.Buzz Lwb GTX
  • Volkswagen ID.Buzz Lwb Pro
  • Volkswagen ID.Buzz Nwb GTX

Whichever ID.Buzz trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Volkswagen ID.Buzz.

The Volkswagen ID.Buzz is VW's electric reimagining of the iconic Microbus, built on the MEB platform and sold in the UK from 2022. It is an MPV rather than an SUV, with seating for five (Short Wheelbase) or seven (Long Wheelbase) and a distinct retro-modern design. The Short Wheelbase uses a battery of around 77 to 79kWh usable; the Long Wheelbase stretches to roughly 86kWh. Both charge through a Type 2 inlet for AC and a CCS port for rapid DC charging.

At home and at public AC chargers, the cable you bring is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead. The ID.Buzz's onboard AC charger accepts up to 11kW on three phases as standard across the range. DC rapid charging is far faster, reaching 170kW or beyond depending on variant and year, using the charger's own tethered cable rather than anything you supply.

The ID.Buzz is a larger vehicle with a substantial battery. Overnight home charging on a dedicated EV tariff is the most practical and economical approach for most owners. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the ID.Buzz need?

The ID.Buzz charges at up to 11kW from a three-phase AC source, but on a standard UK single-phase home supply the rate is capped at 7.4kW regardless of wallbox or cable. Nearly every home in the UK is single-phase, so for most owners a 7.4kW Type 2 cable is all that is needed. It delivers the maximum your home installation can provide, and the ID.Buzz's larger battery makes a longer overnight charge entirely normal regardless.

A 22kW cable only adds value if two conditions are met: a three-phase home supply, and access to a 22kW AC public charger. In that scenario the ID.Buzz would draw its full 11kW, roughly halving the AC charge time versus a single-phase setup. But on a typical UK residential driveway, the charging rate is 7.4kW whichever cable you choose. Given the ID.Buzz's size, you may also want a longer cable than the 5m standard: a 7m or 10m lead gives more flexibility in fitting the cable comfortably to the car from a fixed wallbox position.

What does it cost to charge?

Charging the SWB's 79kWh battery from empty costs roughly £6 on an off-peak tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, and around £21 to £22 at a standard domestic rate of around 27p per kWh. The LWB at around 86kWh costs roughly £6.50 off-peak and around £23 at standard rates. As a family MPV covering higher weekly mileage than a city car, the ID.Buzz benefits considerably from a dedicated overnight EV tariff. Public rapid charging at motorway speeds is expensive per kWh and best kept for long trips. Tariffs change, so check current figures.

Contact us
What charging cable does the Volkswagen ID.Buzz need?+

The Volkswagen ID.Buzz has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on up to three-phase AC at up to 11kW.

Can the Volkswagen ID.Buzz charge at 22kW?+

Yes, the Volkswagen ID.Buzz has a three-phase onboard charger, so with a 22kW cable and a three-phase supply it can charge at up to 11kW.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What cable does the VW ID.Buzz need for charging?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC chargers. The ID.Buzz uses the standard European Type 2 AC inlet. Given the vehicle's size, a 7m or 10m cable often gives more comfortable reach from a fixed wallbox than the standard 5m.

Can the VW ID.Buzz charge at 11kW at home?+

Only on a three-phase home supply. The onboard charger supports up to 11kW on three phases, but UK home electricity is almost always single-phase, which caps home charging at 7.4kW. On a three-phase supply or at an 11kW public AC charger, the full 11kW is available.

How long does the VW ID.Buzz take to charge at home?+

On a 7.4kW wallbox the SWB's 79kWh battery takes around 10.5 to 11 hours from empty; the LWB at 86kWh takes roughly 11.5 to 12 hours. Both are comfortably within an overnight charge window. A 3-pin socket is impractically slow for a battery this large.

Does the SWB ID.Buzz charge differently to the LWB?+

Both have the same 11kW three-phase AC onboard charger, so the charging rate per kWh is identical. The LWB simply has a larger battery, so absolute charge time from empty is a little longer. DC rapid charging rates also differ: the SWB reaches around 170kW and the LWB up to around 200kW on suitable chargers.
