Why this fits your ID.2+

The Volkswagen ID.2 has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 11kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 11kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Volkswagen ID.2.

The Volkswagen ID.2 is a small electric hatchback built on VW's MEB Entry platform, expected to reach the UK from 2026. It carries a battery of around 52kWh usable capacity and charges through a Type 2 inlet for AC, with a CCS port for DC rapid charging at up to around 125kW. The ID.2 shares its underpinnings with the ID. Polo and is positioned as a more affordable entry point to the MEB family.

Home and public AC charging uses a Type 2 to Type 2 cable that you bring to the charge point. The ID.2's onboard charger is rated at 11kW on three phases, so both the cable rating and the supply type determine how fast the battery tops up on AC.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the ID.2 need?

All UK homes are effectively limited to 7.4kW AC charging unless they have a three-phase supply, which is rare in residential properties. The ID.2's 11kW onboard charger is capable beyond what most driveways can supply, so a 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable gives virtually all owners the full home charging speed available to them. It is also the more affordable option.

Three-phase access changes the calculation: at a 22kW public AC charger or a three-phase home supply, the ID.2 will charge at its full 11kW through a 22kW rated cable. For daily home use on a standard single-phase supply, the extra cost of a 22kW cable provides no speed advantage at all. A 5m lead covers most setups; go to 7m or 10m if the run from wallbox to car is longer than typical.

What does it cost to charge?

Filling the 52kWh battery from empty on an off-peak tariff of around 7.5p per kWh costs roughly £4. At a standard tariff of around 27p per kWh, the same charge costs around £14. As a compact city hatchback, the ID.2 is inexpensive to run, particularly on an overnight off-peak home tariff. Always check current rates, as these change.

Contact us
Can the Volkswagen ID.2 charge at 22kW?+

Yes, the Volkswagen ID.2 has a three-phase onboard charger, so with a 22kW cable and a three-phase supply it can charge at up to 11kW.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What charging cable does the Volkswagen ID.2 need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC charge points. The onboard charger supports up to 11kW on three phases. A 7.4kW cable is the practical choice for most UK homes; a 22kW cable is only worth the extra cost if you have a three-phase supply or regularly use 22kW public chargers.

Can the VW ID.2 charge at 11kW or 22kW on AC?+

The ID.2 supports up to 11kW AC on a three-phase supply. On a standard single-phase UK home, AC charging peaks at 7.4kW regardless of cable. On a three-phase supply or at a 22kW public AC point, the car charges at 11kW. It cannot exceed 11kW on AC.

How long does the VW ID.2 take to charge at home?+

On a 7.4kW home wallbox, the 52kWh battery takes around seven hours from empty. That fits comfortably within an overnight charge window. DC rapid charging at up to around 125kW can replenish the battery much faster at public fast chargers when you need a quicker top-up on a journey.

What length cable do I need for the VW ID.2?+

A 5m cable suits most driveway arrangements for a compact hatchback like the ID.2. If your wallbox is set back from where you park, or if you often park in a way that puts the port further from the socket, a 7m cable is a useful upgrade.
